Old Review's Opinion of "Seduction"

Postby Graphic » Jan 27th, '11, 18:19

Apologize if this belongs in Chit Chat.

Anyway, I remember around the time that Recovery came out, I saw some review online that talked about tracks like Seduction showing a more "flirtatious" Em, and how the tracks just showed that he had no idea how to age gracefully.

I don't think I had really heard Seduction many times at that point...(I tend to listen to the album straight through a few times and then just listen to one or two songs that I like for a while, then move on to one or two others, so I eventually get to know the entire album pretty well; Seduction came late in the process)...so I didn't form much of an opinion about the review.

Anyway, going back, now that I know the song, I obviously don't agree with the reviewer. I feel like he missed the point of the song entirely.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: It's a small section of the review, but here it is:

"Otherwise the only moments of stretching here come on a pair of songs — “So Bad,” “Seduction” — on which he takes a crack at flirtatiousness, with awkward results. Listening to them makes it clear that Eminem, at 37 one of the most freakishly gifted technicians in rap history, still has almost no sense of how to age gracefully."

Well I'd be able to answer better if you could find the link to the review so I could see what he actually said. But as a whole when Recovery first came out I thought Seduction was decent but nothing special. Would have struggled to make my top 10 on the album. But I find myself playing it more & more lately so I guess it actually has a lot more replay value than I thought it would have. The beat has grown on me and overall I definitely have a higher opinion of the song now than I did 6 months ago.

^ Hahaha omg that's such a funny picture, good thing you put /thread so we know that your picture is a sufficiant reason for this thread to be answered. Hahaha good one man!

But yeah, this would be easier to answer if you provided a link to the review, or else I can't say anything.

How in the world do you take a month to listen to an album?!

People like this - I'm not going to say don't get hip-hop because I'm sick of reading that, but this guy and people like this - do not get Eminem. Part of his thing has always been to purposely make a creep out of himself. Where as other guys talk about how cool and smooth they are, he talks about how smelly and weird he is.

He's always been self-deprecating and very British in his humour, and, he takes a lot of influence from Slick Rick so I think maybe he got some of that from him. And, just his personality too. But to call Eminem creepy or awkward in such a context makes no sense. It'd be like calling Ricky Gervais cringing... he's TRYING to be that. It's being done on purpose, with sarcasm. It's not an accident it's his fucking intent.

I mean, do they seriously think Em is trying to be LL Cool J when he's saying things like "as soon as you wrote your number on a napkin I was bound to work a number on your back and throw your spine out of alignment". All throughout Recovery he keeps his old attitude up...

Even in "W.T.P." - "I'll be damned if I feed a chick / it ain't like me to split a piece of dry pita!" - that's hilarious. Purposely making himself the psycho creep, he's made weird and nasty cool. To a greater degree than anybody ever has...

"Ain't shit changed, I'm still the same lame asshole with a different name"

It's nothing new. So, to say he sound awkward or creepy as if it's unintended is simply misunderstanding what he's trying to do. Do they think he's not aware that he's 38 and it will come across that way, that's his aaaiiiiiim. Moron. It's like... I saw Jud Apatow criticize some of Gervais' jokes at The Globes. One of the jokes was about the film The Tourist. Gervais said something like "seems like everything is 3 dimensional this year, except the characters in The Tourist"...

and then he laughed and said he was jumping on the bandwagon as he hasn't even seen it. Then said "who has". Apatow's criticism was basicaly that, it's unfair of Gervais to joke about a film he hasn't seen... this deserves the biggest face-palm possible. DO YOU THESE PEOPLE HAVE BRAINS? Gervais even said "I haven't seen it... who has" THAT'S THE POINT OF THE FUCKING JOKE APATOW, THAT HE HASN'T SEEN IT, THAT'S THE IRONY - IT'S SO BAD HE DOESN'T EVEN NEED TO SEE IT.

And the fact Gervais made that part of the joke and Apatow is like... acting as if he 'accidentally' slipped up and insulted it or something lmfao. It makes no fucking sense at all, and the fact that criticism came from an otherwise smart writer, worries me.

Whether or not the artist is aware of what they're doing is the whole point. So... if Eminem was trying to sound desirable, sweet, romantic and light hearted but came across like that, this guy would have a point. But he's TRYING and aware that he's coming across a creep, that's his entire aim and what he makes art out of, so saying he's doing that = success, not fail. The fail is the fact this fucknut thinks it's an accident, or opposite intention.

No critic should be allowed to review Rap. Most of 'em are 50 years old faggots who's favorite genres are classic rock and/or country :shakehead:

What's up with critics taking hip hop lyrics WAY too literally?

:facepalm :shakehead:

Seduction is an awesome and fun track

Came back to annihilate, the game's in dire straights, as I await
Word on Satan, as I drop, fall to my knees before this Quija board and I pray
Now I lay me down to sleep
I do this shit in my sleep, I’m sleepin' now, imagine if I awake
