A decade of dominance for Eminem

Postby mecuryball » Jan 27th, '11, 22:02

Not New Though, but worth seeing 4 those that haven't seen some of these Facts.

In a prominent special
section 10 years ago this
week, the Free Press
ranked Michigan's most
important artists and
entertainers of the 20th
Century.
Barely on the list, way
down at No. 98, was a
burgeoning young
rapper who had just
made waves with his
debut album: Eminem.
What a difference a
decade makes.
And what a decade. Eminem
owned the '00s, moving 32 million
albums in the United States alone
to finish as the decade's top-selling
act. He stamped his presence
everywhere -- the radio airwaves,
magazine covers, network news,
tabloid pages, the blogosphere.
Rising to global prominence from a
tumultuous upbringing in and
around Detroit, Marshall Mathers
was like a story made for the
movies. And yep: "8 Mile" became
one of the biggest films of 2002,
grossing $243 million worldwide
and earning him an Oscar for the
song "Lose Yourself," which spent

Reader poll: Eminem's best song

More than 3,000 votes were cast at
freep.com to select the best of
Eminem's catalog. His 2002 hit
"Lose Yourself" was the runaway
winner out of the gate, capturing
nearly one-fourth of the vote. Of
the 90 career songs up for
consideration, just one -- the
disposable 2004 track "Puke" --
failed to garner at least one vote.
One takeaway from the results:
Fans generally rate Em's darker,
more serious material ahead of his
lighter Slim Shady stuff. Just two of
the latter -- "Without Me" and "The
Real Slim Shady" -- cracked the top
10.
1. "Lose Yourself" (24%)
2. "Stan (8%)
3. "The Way I Am" (7%)

From 3,010 votes in a Free Press
web poll, conducted Nov. 25-
Dec. 9.

Run-ins
Em's most notable beefs this

1. Insane Clown Posse: Knotty,
long-running dispute between two
local rap acts. Led to charges for Em
in 2000 when he pulled a pistol on
an ICP associate. Current status:
Lukewarm.
2. The Source: Eminem dissed the
mag in song after a bad review;
ex-publisher Benzino responded
with his own anti-Em tracks.
Current status: Low simmer.
3. Moby: In 2001, Moby decried
Eminem as misogynist and
homophobic; a year later the
rapper responded with a withering
lyrical put-down. Current status:
Chill.
4. Mariah Carey: Em has mocked
his alleged ex-flame in several
songs; she recently upped the ante
with a thinly disguised response
song. Current status: Hot.
5. Triumph the Insult Comic Dog:

Eminem raged at the mouthy
puppet on a 2002 awards show,
mistakenly linking it with Moby. He
since got in on the joke, even
enlisting Triumph for a 2005 video.
Current status: All good.

I agree with most of the top 10 (songs) you know, as legendary songs which should be called his greatest, in his career. And actually... some of those are just his greatest flat-out anyway, such as "The Way I Am" and "Till I Collapse"...

But I can't believe "Beautiful" made the top 10, let alone number fucking 5. I mean, I like the song but TOP 10 EVER (in his career)? get real. It's not even top 30.

We all know Em's a beast though. He took a few years off too, plus I'm not sure if the SSLP even counted toward last decade's sales. I don't think so.

So..yeah, he kicks ass.

Lmao what do you mean 'as if'? It's not an opinion he sold that many.

I knew somebody would fucking answer like this.

Did you read my post? Did you not see where I said "I like a song but..." - Now, would I LIKE a song I thought wasn't good...

So why respond as if I was calling the song shit. Now, it being good doesn't make it top fucking 10, "Beautiful" is nowhere near top 10 Eminem song ever, that's insane. And, I'm not a 'hater' stop speaking like a lamo every time somebody disagrees with you. If somebody has a valid reason for an opinion, it's not 'hate'. Grow up.

Nothing to fucking do with that, and I've been one to say people exaggerate how bad he was just because they now know he was on drugs. As, if you take his verse from "The Re-Up", it's not bad at all. The flow isn't far off what he's doing now and the lyrics aren't bad either.

^ Oh okay, it sounds kinda weird to say 'as if' there.

Because 'as if' is like... I know what you mean, it's like a disbelief but, it's usually used when you're genuinely like dismissing the validity in something like...

"I'm a black belt"

= Yeah right, as if. Lmao, so sounds weird to say it to an instantly... valid fact.

I like how his "best songs" are all from MMLP and TES besides for 8 Mile. Not saying that it shouldn't, but it just shows how on top he was back in that era.

That's insane.

But the number of movies that fall under the rap film genre is obviously a lot smaller than, say, action. That being said, it's still an achievement and a great movie.

Not top 10, but I'd put it roughly around top 30.

That song, like it or not, was important.

In my opinion anyway.

Top 30 sounds better :y:

But, there are countless Eminem songs that are better than TRSS. Till I Collapse, Rock Bottom, Brain Damage, Cinderella Man, Stay Wide Awake, Superman, Soldier, I'm Back, Criminal, Just Don't Give a Fuck, Drug Ballad etc...
