It was a guy back in 03 maybe 04 he made a song called "Tipsy" his name was J-Kwon that started it all then Lil John and the Eastside boys came and then the ying yang twins started getting mainstream success then Atlanta blew the fuck up. It was downhill from there.

The great artists who helped the genre getting popular ruined it. Ironically it is because of them that there is so much money in the game now.

I know a lot of artists in the mainstream don't really have complex lyrics or anything, but if it wasn't for someone like 2pac and Eminem, the industry wouldn't have seen its potential.

There's always people who are gonna say that the genre they listen to sucks now. The person who popularized that term and smacked it in the faces of the public was Nas though. Naming his album that required alot of balls

The only difference between now and then is that we now have a mainstream, and to be fair some of the popular rappers these days are pretty good: Nas, Jay-Z, Outkast, Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, B.o.b, J. Cole (this year). Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, T.I. and Kanye West write good songs sometimes too... I have probably forgot a few. Is Talib Kweli considered mainstream?

The underground will always be better though because it is simply much bigger.
