Can't really pinpoint an exact song or album, but Master P and No Limit played a big role.

actually thats kinda hard to pinpoint, there has been wack rap since the 80's (Hammer and Ice) so it's all spread out and I think Hip-Hop is still alive and well. The future looks bright (Kid Cudi, J.Cole, Wiz, Yela, B.o.B, Lupe, Asher)

My bad, I was talking about the first decline. Cash Money (before YM), they made it popular to rap about nothing but your car and your bling.

The great artists who helped the genre getting popular ruined it. Ironically it is because of them that there is so much money in the game now.

I know a lot of artists in the mainstream don't really have complex lyrics or anything, but if it wasn't for someone like 2pac and Eminem, the industry wouldn't have seen its potential.

Crank That by Soulja Boy killed hip hop. And Cash Money delivered the overkill

Came back to annihilate, the game's in dire straights, as I await
Word on Satan, as I drop, fall to my knees before this Quija board and I pray
Now I lay me down to sleep
I do this shit in my sleep, I’m sleepin' now, imagine if I awake

There's always people who are gonna say that the genre they listen to sucks now. The person who popularized that term and smacked it in the faces of the public was Nas though. Naming his album that required alot of balls :zipped:

The only difference between now and then is that we now have a mainstream, and to be fair some of the popular rappers these days are pretty good: Nas, Jay-Z, Outkast, Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, B.o.b, J. Cole (this year). Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, T.I. and Kanye West write good songs sometimes too... I have probably forgot a few. Is Talib Kweli considered mainstream?

The underground will always be better though because it is simply much bigger.

omg :facepalm

There's always been shit in Hip-Hop, back to MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice. There's no ONE song that started the decline in Hip-Hop because there is no decline.
