Technically you're all correct.

California is weird like that, it confuses people. Compton is a city, just as Long Beach is, just as Inglewood is etc.

The confusion is that Los Angeles doesn't have boroughs, like New York does. For example, Brooklyn, Queens, Harlem etc. are all boroughs of New York city.

LA is divided into council districts and each disrict has an elected representative on the City council. So Compton is a city within the Los Angeles County.

So technically, a County = City, and therefore Compton, Long Beach etc. = boroughs.
