To be honest, this is a bit of a misconception.
He got plenty of luck and, admittely, was a ridiculously good speaker - apart from that, he really wasn't a great leader as people seem to think.
In fact, the most clever thing he did, was not sign any documents to associate himself with Holocaust, even though it was obvious that he was the force behind it. It was also the rest of the party that made so popular within Germany - Hitler Youth, for example, wasn't even directly Hitler's idea. It was the party as a whole. Hitler had his ideas but the organistion of the whole thing, and the fact the country was manipulated was down to Joseph Goebbels and his amazing propaganda.
He tried a fuckin' revolution when the Nazi's were still a tiny party, an incredibly naive move. It was only because the judge at the trial was a family friend that he wasn't sentenced to life imprisonment. Rest is history.
Britain and France could have easily stopped him when he invaded Alsence Lorraine and Hitler himself said he wouldn't have been have been alble to do anything about it if they hadnt followed the policy of appeasement.
The reason the Nazi's got as far as they did was down to propaganda (Goebbels), the economy at the time and the luck they managed to get. Hitler was an incredible motivator, but a great leader? Not so much.
