Game "The Documentary" -- Thoughts?

Postby OMEGA » Feb 9th, '11, 07:39

I'm pretty late to this, but I've been listening to Game's The Documentary a lot the past couple days. Gotta say, this is a great album. Game's not anything out of the ordinary in terms of lyrics, but kinda like 50 Cent, he makes enjoyable music and knows how to ride those beats, and man, what BEATS this album has. The production has to be undoubtedly one of the best of the past decade. I love the dark tone of a lot of the beats, which remind me a lot of Get Rich or Die Tryin' (which I also loved). Maybe the only true negative that I can think of is that Game drops names way too often and they get kinda annoying, but even that is just nitpicking.

My favorite songs gotta be "The Documentary" (incredible, Still-Dre-ish beat), Dreams (kickass Kanye beat), "No More Fun and Games", and my personal favorite, "Like Father Like Son" (godly beat, good storytelling and awesome Busta Rhymes hook)

I can definitely see why this is called a classic.

Was the latest Game mixtape close to this?

Purp & Patron was just new music for Game's audience to salivate. It's a good mixtape, but it's nothing special. Game has listenable music for days, dude is a machine in that aspect.

As for The Documentary, yeah it's easily a classic. One thing I'll say about the West is that their music is never ever played in New York, all our DJ's completely ignore it, no matter how big the record is. Documentary broke that barrier, his records were played in NY a lot, and I'm not just talking about the 50 Cent ones. So that should say something in terms of the achievements of this record.

There is no doubt 50 had a major part in this album, but nonetheless, it's a classic album.

I think this album represented Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit at their very peak, because Eminem was the king all together, 50 Cent was dominating, Banks/Buck were platinum, and then Game came and took over the West. This won't happen ever again in hip hop.
The New York Times - "Lloyd Banks may have stealthily become the most important rapper in New York".

Love that album. I am from L.A, but I am all about East Coast Rap>West Coast Rap...I think the West's lyricism is just weak, but I actually enjoyed this album. When it came out I was about 13-14, and Game became my favorite rapper. I liked him more than I like Em now. I had posters, CD's, etc.

I hate him now.

My favorite track of the album was the title track, "The Documentary"

I think the chorus was amazing.

"I'm 'Ready to Die' without a 'Reasonable Doubt'
Smoke 'Chronic' and hit it 'Doggystyle' before I go out
Until they sign my 'Death Certificate' it's 'All Eyez on Me'
I'm still at it, 'Illmatic'...and that's 'The Documentary'."
"This dude doing this interview wants me to spin a few,
Lyrics while I tie my tennis shoes in the nude
A romantic interlude in a livin’ room,
In an inner tube with a dude with a bit of lube
Fuck that I’m sniffin’ glue, sippin' gin & juice,
And a little bit of paint thinner with my dinner too,
You better pay me for my bars like your rent is due,
Now hurry up and finish dude before I finish you."

The Documentary is a true classic rap album. An album that can be played straight through and never gets boring. Full of great songs, great production, nice features. Favorite tracks for me are The Documentary, Dreams, Like Father Like Son, Where I'm From, Put You On The Game...they're basically all good though. This is what developed me into a HUGE Game fan. I followed his career ever since, and kinda gave up hope on him with all the R.E.D push-backs, but i am right back on his bandwagon now that he's back spitting the fire. Definitely check out Purp & Patron as well as The Hangover. They're mixtapes but are better than most albums these days.

Game is the only gangster rap that I enjoy. Alot of his shit is really heart felt. I also respect his music alot more than most of these corny fucks because he lives it.

and the documentary is by far his best album. It's no doubt a classic

In fairness it's probably the most "spoon fed" acclaimed hip hop album of the last decade

I mean Game spits NO classic verses, no quotables, the high points of the album (Beats, porduction and hooks) where all laid down for him already, ANYBODY could have made a great album with the production line-up Game got, and the best hooks (if not every hook) on here are either samples or written by 50 Cent

That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael

You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide

Came back to annihilate, the game's in dire straights, as I await
Word on Satan, as I drop, fall to my knees before this Quija board and I pray
Now I lay me down to sleep
I do this shit in my sleep, I’m sleepin' now, imagine if I awake

I barely like any songs by the Game, most of them are from The Documentary
Start From Scratch, The Documentary, We Ain't & Put You On The Game are my faves off of it.

Love The Documentary. One of my favorite albums from the past decade. Game has heart, one of the best from the west. Production is top notch too.
