Remember how every album he had was in some way different? And it stood out because it was different, good or bad, like encore and relapse...some people love them, more hate encore than relapse, but they receive the most hate I think from em fans, but anyway.
The fact is, recovery was completely different than what he has done, and even in it's similarities in content (cold wind blows is a perfect example) he still did these tracks differently, and this made the album itself so different. Why can't that be a good thing?
Yeah punchlines or wordplay might be corny, but that is this album. He doesn't always rehash his style or ways of writing, while content and general ideas in his material is often the same or similar, he is always different...and I think that while people may hate it, or simply dislike it, why can't that still be viewed as good? My point may be better explained simply by using relapse as an example: the accents most hated, the content was similar but more intense and showed up in more songs (killing), but it was different than any other album.
One thing I think makes him so unique as an artist, and especially a rap artist because rap all about people's opinion and is always debated...is his ability to do songs about so many things, in so many ways, throughout his entire career. Nobody else comes close to this, especially when you break down his categorical songs.
What I mean is, he does serious songs, personal songs, story-telling songs, angry songs, funny songs, diss songs, drug songs, concept tracks, lyrical songs, political songs, party/club, love songs, hateful songs, ironic songs, songs with accents, yelling, skits, he does everything. And what I mean by breaking them down further is for example:
White America- Serious, political, personal, irony, etc
As The World Turns-Story telling, lyrical, funny, etc.
Marshall Mathers- Angry, personal, serious, diss, irony, etc.
WTP-Funny, party/club, story-telling, maybe personal, etc.
Lose Yourself- Serious, personal, story-telling, lyrical, angry, etc.
Almost Famous-Angry, funny, personal, serious, etc.
The point is, I feel we overlook sometimes what songs or in this case albums mean for his music on a larger scale, and while breaking it down is fine, we have to remember without trying new things he would never get to the songs we do love. And his old music is old music, he cannot remain the same, but the fact we still care and listen and comment in these type of threads I think shows that he is still putting out great music because if he wasn’t and none of us listened anymore, we wouldn’t care enough to even read these topics. Just my thoughts tho…

- the beats are just typical to what is being heard today, he didn't go above and beyond
- eminem used to say "just dont give a fuck", but clearly on this album he does
- he collaborated with artists i never wanted to hear in an eminem song (rihanna, lil wayne)
- overall, it just doesn't give me the feeling that his past albums had given me...it is lacking in personality
