Man, nobody is forced to do shit.
If I was him and they tried to make me compromise I'd say go fuck yourselves and put nothing out. Then fight out the contract in court (if obliged to do X number of albums) - arguing they breached the contract by trying to alter or influence artistic direction (assuming that been laid out).
Either way, they didn't put a gun to his head. A real artist should rather put nothing out than to put out a compromised piece of work. And I'm not saying he's not a real artist, he clearly is - but it's a poor excuse to compromise yourself then act as if you had no choice. Shame.
I know personally, I could not BARE putting out something I knew was compromised. No fucking way. I'd stand on a fucking bridge threatening to jump at their expense, out of spite, before I'd release my art compromised for them.
