Which mcs do YOU think are underrated?

Postby dead prez » Mar 9th, '11, 06:38

Before we get started I know tihs thread was probably made before but I'd like to clear up some amibguities. I know underrated is such an iffy word that can be applied to any rapper that you don't feel gets his due, whether it be on the net, a particular forum ,mtv, or just in general. I'm talking about in general. Also I'm not asking you to list a slew of underground mcs who have less than ten fans but probably suck balls, obviously the content has to match up with said rapper's fame or appreciation. So if you feel like Kanye is an underrated rapper or even Wayne who you feel get unecessary hate than don't be afraid. And finally guys like Big L, Az, Lupe Fiasco, Ludacris aren't underrated.

Anyways

One Be Lo- I just got into his music abouta month ago so maybe I'm jumping the gun but I really wish he had more hype around him. This guy's is phenemonal with his multies and is a great writer (enecS eht no kcaB) yet he's only mentioned by Hip Hop heads really delved into the genre. He doesn't reach with his multies either and has a dope flow and delivery only flaw I might find with him so far is his voice if even that. Still if you haven't heard of him check out Sonogram and Masters of the Universe. One of the most slept on mcs out there.

Prodigy- This might be wrong and I'm probably a stan so, don't take my opnion about him too seriously but I rarely see this guys get his props, other than fellow stans. He may have fell off horribly, but his material from 95-99 was great. He has a lot of unrelease material that are better than some of the songs on his albums (Pyramid Points) and imo had one of the best deliveries of th mid 90s. He wasn't a great rhymer by any sense and almost feels weird putting him on the same list with OBL, such a weird contrast but he still had the illest voice in rap at the time.

Lil Wayne- I feel he gets a lot of unecessary hate because of members like LW4L, (not just in this forum ,but in general) people that like to act as if he's the best alive would of course get him a lot of hate. I still feel that during 05-08 was his prime and he released decent material to bump in your car, obviously not meant to make you think but still fun to bump. Not everything has to be some thought provoking song, and he just has some that I feel are easy on the ears.

Edan- This might go more towards the type that people sleep on rather than just underrated, but this guy is extremely dope. Beauty and the Beat is a great album and I highly recommend it.

Any member of DITC not Big L yeah OC, Lord Finesse, Diamond D etc. They all had great albums under their belt, but rarely get a heads. It seems like L's the only one that rose amid the DITC ranks and established himself as a supposed goat ,(even though I honestly don't think he deserves that) either way Stunts Blunts and Hip Hop, Word...Life, Funky Technician are all great oldschool joints. Hell even Fat Joe had a decent album under his album, and this was before Pun or Terrorsquad.

Drake - I slept on him for a while cuz I judged him off his radio hits, some of his mixtape stuff is straight fire.

Aesop Rock - I never see him brought up around here, he's one of the most original dudes out there

Bun B - I think a lot of people think he's just another Southern garbage rapper, hell no.

Don't listen to enough Drake to judge him tbh, and was never really into Aesop Rock. Couldn't listen to his music, though I might give him a try some other time.

Agree with you on Bun B and the South in general, so many people sleep in the South and really only know it for Outkast when it has a lot of great mcs out right now. Krit being one of my favorites, and he supposedly influenced a lot by Pimp C.

I think Game can be underrated some times. He has had 1 classic, 1 near-classic, and 1 solid album so far. Plus, a successful series in You Know What It Is 1-4. His other mixtapes Brake Lights and Purp & Patron are good too.

Word Game can be pretty dope, I don't know if I'd consider Doctor's Advocate a classic but more a solid album. Still he has some of the best disses in Hip Hop

300 bars (G unit diss)

Down and out (G unit diss)

Joe Budden diss

Gift of Gab and Zumbi are seriously underrated even though underground, I honestly think their both part of some of the best duos in Hip Hop. Blackalicious and Zion I respectively.

Fear>all of TML (which I liked)

This song's just dope, but i see how people might not like Aesop. He definitely deserves respect though.

Rhyme Asylum - These dudes are extremely fucking DOPE, they've managed to turn almost every saying into a great punchline. I challenge you to find any song of theres that doesn't have atleast one dope quotable. Yet they're unsigned with only 5000 facebook fans while Birdman gets radioplay :shakehead:

Diabolic - This dude is ill as fuck, crazy multis and punchlines. After Eminems from 97-03 i'd say this is my perfect MC. Once again slept on as fuck with only 3000 facebook fans, his allegiance with Immortal Technique (who's definitely not slept on or underrated) has however given him more fans.

Gotta say this holds true to what Hopsin said "real artists get shelved and wack ones get famous"
Speaking of Hopsin if this were any other forum i'd list him and state reasons why but not gonna bother on here. However Hopsin is underrated and madly slept on in general.

Been sayin this for awhile. I'll say 3/4s of SH is underrated, with the exception of 5'9 cause a lot of people know him obviously on these boards, and in general cause of his popularity and because of linking up with Em for so many years. Joe Budden is really underrated. People always say that stupid oh he's whack bullshit, just cause they heard maybe 2 songs from him in their life time, Pump It Up, and Fire ft. Busta. I would say Canibus is underrated too. He doesn't get enough praise. He really could be one of the best all time lyrically, it's just I don't like him cause his voice is annoying as shit, and he can be a little prick too.

Kool Keith: WAY ahead of his time, invented abstract hip-hop, influenced every emcee from Del Tha Funkee Homosapien to Lil B and yet he never seems to get his props nowadays. Everything from his rhyme style to his clothing style has been bitten, and still is. No Keith = no MF DOOM, abstarct Ghostface, Andre 3000, Lil Wayne, etc

MF Grimm: sick rapper, The Downfall of Ibliys: A Ghetto Opera was made in 24 hours before Grimm went to prison for life. He made the only TRIPLE hip hop album that I'm aware of with American Hunger. He also spit some of my favourite bars ever on "Take Em to War"

We kill crews, hearts go numb
and if retaliation comes then yo fuck it, it just comes
(Yo who you?)
I'm Dr. Death motherfucker ever heard of me?
Close your eyes, cross your fingers, time for surgery
I'm already dead, so nah, you can't murder me
cause quantities of entities enter me evilly
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified

I second this, sad thing is it's mainly because they're from the UK. Funny thing is though their accents are probably the easiest on the ears, you people not from the UK have no idea what most UK hip hop sounds like in terms of accent, it'd be almost unintelligible to you guys. Whereas Rhyme Asylum are pretty clear in what they say, and one of very few who don't use the annoying lingo UK rap has developed. But nah, people are too ignorant so they remain mostly unknown, even though lyrically they will make your jaw drop if you actually pay attention to what they say.
