I like every chorus on the album. It's just my taste.

I'm glad he changed direction but he did lose some identity with this. This is bump out loud music, not headphone music. It will definitely get some spins in the car.

I cancelled my pre-order after having heard so many bad reviews, downloaded it instead to check it out and this is what I wrote on a wutang's forum yesterday:

I really looked forward to this album after I heard the singles and one of the leaked tracks. Thought it was easily going to be one of the illest albums of the year but sadly this is let down by what Lupe Fiasco always has been against: Poor lyrics.

There are some great moments on the album though. “Words I Never Said” is a very deep song that applies to a lot of people out there (glad something like that will get a lot of airplay, thanks Lupe). “State Run Radio” is another quite cool track with an ironic and interesting message while “All Black Everything” is a nice political journey. “Never Forget You” is nice feel good track but maybe lacks some mind blowing overall message.

I’ve seen the album’s production get a lot of critisicm but I think it is nice. Really uplifting and modern sound… Maybe two bad beats but the rest of it is cool imo.

If it wasn’t for Lupe’s recent comments, I probably would have bought it just to get those few tracks I like and to support him (he shows glimpses of great lyricism after all) but after reading what was going on at the label, I feel I would support the industry rather than the actual artist.

Very disappointing album.

actually yes I have come to like Coming Up and Letting Go as they have grown on me. Otherwise though I am still dissapointed

I only replay like 3 songs off of it. It's definitely not an 8/10 anymore but I think it's an alright album though a definitive stain on Lupe's great catalog up until it's release. The highs on the album are top 50 Lupe songs (Letting Go, Beautiful Lasers), while the lows on the album are the worst of Lupe's career. I never really got the smash on the production tbh, I mean yes it's more modern and it's not the Lupe we're used to but the only beats I didn't like were Words I Never Said & I Don't Wanna Care Right Now. What really killed it for me were hooks like Break The Chain & State Run Radio, though I think the latter was intentional in the same essence of Dumb It Down.

The lyrics are...well, when they're not terrible, they range from alright to decent. They were lacking his signature style, although I enjoyed the introspective side of Lupe in certain songs that we normally don't get to see much in his music. One thing that could have fixed the album is lengthening it a bit with the bonus tracks and that one track that Koolo leaked. I mean it's only 12 tracks, which leaves alot to be desired with the amount of meh on here, while "Beamin", "Shining Down" & the Koolo track are class when put in the middle of this bunch.

All in all, It's fun to listen to once in a while and it's going to be funny to look back on when his next album comes out, but overall I'd give it a 6.5: Fair.
