What happened to Eminem?

Postby Block » Mar 17th, '11, 23:46

I've been listening 'The Eminem Show' today (specifically 'Sing for the moment') and songs like 'Mockingbird' and 'When I'm Gone'.. He had amazing emotion and passion in his music in these songs. These are the songs that I used to listen to religiously when I was a teenager and was going through alot of rough times. His emotion, combined with his choice of words and subject matter is what made me a hardcore fan of his...

Today, I don't hear that same emotion or passion. His emotion is beyond forced--to the point of screaming--and his passion is seemingly gone. Sure, he still has 'talent' but that never leaves. He can still form rhymes and put words together, but they are seemingly meaningless in comparison to the music I grew up on. Songs like those mentioned above, along with 'white america', 'stan', 'marshal mathers', 'cleaning out my closet' etc etc.. The list goes on. What happened?

At first it didn't really bother me, since I hadn't listened to Em in years.. This is the first time I've sat down to listen to his older stuff in almost 2 years and it genuinely saddens me that he went from (in my eyes) the greatest mainstream artist to ever make it, to this trash that he's producing today. Sure, he had songs like 'Deja vu' and 'beautiful' but even then, they had passion in their writing but not in his voice..

Even though I've been saying he's fallen off hard, it really just now hit me how hard. He was amazing and now he's... Ehh. I don't even listen to his new songs anymore unless someone recommends it. Even then it doesn't effect me.

Mockingbird is a pile of steaming trash compared to Deja Vu.

Maybe on a purely 'rap' level, but not on an artistic/emotional level. Not even close.

I'm glad you were sensible enough to put this in the Hip Hop Domain instead of the Em section.

I know he says that he LOOVESSSSSSSS rapping and all of that shit, but I can't help but feel that now he's rapping because

1.) He's expected by everyone to do it.
2.) He expects himself to do it.

Back then he was hungry, even after getting signed. Music was his life in audio. It was who he was. Now it's what he does. Atleast that's what I believe. Deja Vu is one of my favorite Em songs though.

I feel the exact same way honestly, (minus Eminem being the greatest mainstream Hip Hop artist) I'll admit I haven't given Recovery and Relapse a fair listen to truly formulate a decent opinion on them. But I just can't bring myself to listen to most of his new shit, especially now that I listen to a variety of Hip Hop and only really listen to Grade A albums. IDK, but you basically hit it right on the dot.

Welcome to the sect of people that have been labeled as Eminem haters. You've finally seen the light. Eminem is nothing but a modern-day Icarus that flew too high and burned his wings.

I agree. There's probably alot of different factors but it's just not the same. And don't get me wrong, I mentioned 'deja vu' and 'beautiful' because they're the only songs that stick out from his last two albums that are even remotely close to the passion that we're used to seeing from him.

Deja vu is a great song but it still lacks the passion in his voice that he used to have back with songs like 'cleaning out my closet'. There's really no denying that.

And lello, I agree.. It could be that he 'sold out' but I don't know.. because by the time TES came out, he was already rich and famous and he still put out amazing work. I think it's more like what Satire said: Music used to be his life in audio. Who he was.. Now it's just what he does.

Nah, it's not like that. I haven't even listend to recovery at all. And I couldn't stand any songs off relapse except the two mentioned. I really just made this thread because it never effected me before (his falling off) but today, for some reason, it hit me and saddened me. It's more of a nostalgia thing, I think.

But yeah..

Lello wrote:i've heard people say Recovery is just like the Eminem Show, Eminem On Roman's Revenge sounds like Eminem on MMLP etc.....

SMFH @ that... not even close........

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise that Eminem is no way near what he has been back then, when I speak bout it in the eminem section, I get hated by all the stans

I defend Relapse with all my heart though cause he did not sound FAKE on it, though Recovery was the most plastic shit i've ever heard, even though i like the songs, when I remember it's Eminem singing them I get gutted though, when I remember what he used to make

And PLUS, the only reason I like Encore more than Recovery, not that it's better because it's not, but because It has the Eminem feel to it, Like Toy Soldiers and Mockingbird are better than any 2010 song em has made

To be honest, I think encore gets hated on too much. It has a few really great songs. Evil deeds, toy soldiers, mosh, mockingbird << Which I agree is one of the most criminally underrated em songs ever.

Lello wrote:agreed bout the encore songs u mentioned

IMO Encore has a handfull of bad songs: Big Weenie, Ass Like That, Just Lose It and My 1st Single

the rest is mostly good and some (like the ones u mentioned) are great

There's alot of songs on encore that are trash, but ehh.. It's hard to live up to your first 3 albums when they're all considered genuine classics. I think that's why it got hated on so much; His first 3 albums are legendary.

Pisses me off when people, (not just Lello) just hate Recovery but their arguments seems to hold no backbone, just an attempt to be cool, i mean how can you say Recovery kklled all hope of Eminem coming back for you,

EDIT: I just reread your post and realised you do make valid points about the songs not sounding like him, cuz i agree he certanly lost his undeniable originality that he had in all his albums prior , my argument nullified, Sowwy
I know you want to retaliate but you won't dare,

I agree wit the fact that he changed, alot, but he didnt fell off now,he fell off after MMLP imo.Em that I love is SSLP and MMLP,TES had few classics but imo that album isnt as great as some people make it be.Encore was his lowest point,I dont even remember when was the last time I listened to that shit.Relapse did some justice,it showed that Em`s still a beast, lyrical beast,if only it wasnt for that stupid accent(plus The Warning shows how great he can be).And now Recovery,I think that this albums is dope, not classic but but a decent 7,8/10,it has something for everyone, you have songs with meaning, emotional songs, funny songs, love songs,etc...
On Fire,You`re Never Over,GTC,Space Bound,No Love, all different yet very powerful, especially GTC.Recovery is a modern day version of TES.But the fact that we`ll never get something like SSLP or MMLP makes me sad.Thats the Eminem that I fell in love with, and thats the Eminem I listen to almost every day.
