Em was just in extremely different places in his life when he wrote If I Had and Rock Bottom compared to Going Through Changes. They're all heartfelt, just in a different way.

The problem with "personality", most rappers confuse it with their Image so we get a ton of club/gangster wannabe rappers. and you hear a shitload of underground rappers who may be good but don't stand out. A good personality on a track can hide a track or emcee's flaw just because it's enjoyable

Definitely, whether a rappers underground or mainstream personality always separates the best from the dime a dozen nobodies
Mainstream: Eminem, Kanye, Wayne > Soulja Boy, Wocka Flocka, Gucci
Underground: Your favorite underground rappers > The guys on youtube with dreams of becoming an MC recording mediocre rhymes on a built in laptop microphone over the A Millie beat and getting 12 views in 4 years

If you want to make it you HAVE to have personality and that's in any business be it music, movies, talk shows, Wal Mart greeter or serial killing

Bobby Creekwater is a perfect example of a generic gangsta rapper than will never make it because he has nothing that really stands out about him..

Is personality some type of synonym for just not plain sucking? Cause I'm not trying to start anything, but what do you mean by personality mcees, and I think a lot of people are confusing being innovative and original with personality on the mic. Big wasn't original in any way but he had a personality like no other. Could you give some examples of some lifeless mcs?

Hell even Lil Wayne has personality.

To me, personality is something that makes them uniquem worth interviewing and paying attention to outside of rap. Lil Wayne has TONS of personality. He is a goofy mofo, but he's honestly pretty likable. I'd love to just chill with him. Same with 50. Birdman, on the other hand, has the personality of a jellyfish. I have no clue how he built such a huge empire, he comes across as a lifeless moron. His interviews are the most boring things ever.

Tell that to Leona Lewis

She is boring as fuck, and has ZERO personality. Yet she goes on a reality tv show (X Factor) and turns into a international star selling millions and millions of albums worldwide.

Doesn't always apply.

Funny cuz I have no idea who the fuck she is and in a couple of years no one else will either whilst people still talk about Madonna today. Having your 15 minutes of fame doesn't amount to actually making a name for yourself and going down in history.

I was only going on what you said originally.

You said; "if you want to make it you HAVE to have personality"

Leona Lewis has made it, or did make it. I'm not a fan, but she has.

Two successful #1 albums

'Bleeding Love' - #1 single in 30 countries worldwide, and biggest selling song worldwide in 2008

She goes on regular big money tours, and has done well for herself and has been a commercial success. And she has zero personality.

It was just me thinking of someone who is boring as fuck and has no personality who has been successful, and she came into my head.

You're right though, someone like her has no longevity and will be forgotten about very soon.

^ theres many other people with no personality or a really shitty personality that got their little 15 minutes of fame as well, hell Paris Hilton & Kim Kardashian (hi Sam) are famous for sucking dick on camera and have absolutely no talent and 15 pounds of makeup during every public appearance. In the long run though their names are gonna be lost in a sea of other useless forgotten celebrities. Talent, personality & innovation withstand the test of time, mediocre products & people almost never do unless history is heavily changed to make them seem greater then they are.
