Mainstream is just as talented as Underground

Postby FreeSpeech » Mar 27th, '11, 01:38

I feel like a lot of people don't stop and think that making mainstream hits isn't easy. If it was, anyone would do it. I hate LTWYL, but it takes talent to make a catchy hook and beat like that. Even guys like Soulja Boy have a talent for making hits. Soulja isn't just some idiot who says random junk on a mic and makes millions, he's a dude who knows how to make music a lot of people want to hear. I'm not saying Soulja Boy=DZK, obviously not, but I think a lot of people on here assume that putting together long multis and rhyme schemes is infinitely harder than making a radio hit. TBH, there's probably more good underground rappers than there are rappers who can make a radio hit.

I disagree. Making a beat like the LTYWL one is really easy. The reason why not anyone "does it" is because they don't have the right people/promotion behind them.

Soulja Boy has NO talent at all. How could he have known that a lot of people would listen to "YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!"? Plus, he jacked that beat completely.

Hmmm, well then find me an unknown pop song as catchy as LTWYL?

And Soulja is talented at making catchy songs. Same with Waka. Judging from his interviews, Waka has the IQ of a banana pepper, but songs like No Hands and Hard In The Paint are mad catchy. Again, he obviously isn't as alented as many underground artists, but he does have a talent.

LOL, no!

Names sell. Especially with so much money, time, and promotion being put behind an artist. Put Eminem and Rihanna on any track, saying anything, and it would do well.

'Eminem' is a brand name. Just like Adidas.

The only way that song would have been any bigger (in 2010) is have Justin Bieber doing the verses, and Lady Gaga on the hook.

Nah dude. If you've seen my posts, you know I hate LTWYL more than any Eminem song, including all of Encore. However, I can admit it is hard to make a song that catchy.

Pop can't be unknown, that's the reason why it's called pop (popular).
Way less known than LTWYL, but way catchier:

No man, there is ZERO talent in these guys, with the right promotion team behind them, anyone can do it.

What horrible circular reasoning what does the song being catchy have to do with the names?

He's not talking about how popular it would be, he's saying that making catchy songs requires talent, I'm not neutral on this btw.

Yep. There's for sure dude's who could make radio hits if they wanted to but choose not to.

The point of this thread isn't to say Waka is some brilliant genius or anything. I'm just saying, a lot of people think writing a radio hit is a piece of cake. It's underappreciated.

I assume you mean from 2010? Because there are hundreds from 2010 alone.

And this is actually a relatively 'unknown' pop song.

Shakira Ft. Dizzee Rascal - Loca

This is 'catchier', and it's a better song. I prefer it over LTWYL any day of the week.

INB4 YOU SAY IT WASN'T AS SUCCESSFUL AS LTWYL BECAUSE IT WASN'T AS CATCHY.

Nope, it's because Shakira and Dizzee Rascal are not bigger names than Eminem and Rihanna lol

I meant by an unknown artist, some random undiscovered chick. Big names obviously help make records more popular, but Shakira is an established star who got that way by being able to make hits. Sure, she proably didn't write her songs, but someone did, and they're talented.
