Concious Rap Recommendations?

Postby FreeSpeech » Mar 30th, '11, 03:41

To me, this is my favorite "type" of rap, not underground or mainstream. To me, concious rap is rappers who basically just try to express themselves and share their personal live through music. They will also address social issues, and I'm perfetly fine with them having some BS songs that are just enjoyable.
The kind of dudes I'm talking about: Common, Lupe, Nas, Rakim, J Cole, Blu, Pharoahe Monch, Kanye, Kid Cudi, Mos Def, etc. They have nice lyrics, and talk real life ish.

It's always hard to define styles and such, but this is what I don't really like: Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, AOTP, Canibus, Diabolic (eh some stuff), etc. I don't like conspiracy theories, it's stupid. I don't like rappers who think mentioning either scientific terms or religious/mythological legends makes them sick. I don't like multis for multis' sake, or trying to show how sick you are by saying it . All rappers brag, but some do too much. If you're sick, we should be able to tell. I don't like rappers who tell stories about stuff they obviously never experienced, like having run ins with the CIA or basically anything Canibus says. I don't like bad production or boring beats. I don't like rappers who think they are revolutionaries when they clearly aren't...

Any good stuff? And try to give me fairly unknown guys please, I'm obviously familiar with The Roots, ATCQ, etc.

Thanks!

It can be both mainstream and underground, just like hardcore rap can be both mainstream and underground.

Going by your defintion Ice Cube is a conscious rapper and so are a lot of Gangsta rappers in the 90s.
The kind of dudes I'm talking about: Common, Lupe, Nas, Rakim, J Cole, Blu, Pharoahe Monch, Kanye, Kid Cudi, Mos Def, etc. They have nice lyrics, and talk real life ish.

So do Gangsta rappers.

It's always hard to define styles and such, but this is what I don't really like: Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, AOTP, Canibus, Diabolic (eh some stuff), etc. I don't like conspiracy theories, it's stupid.

Why is it stupid?

I don't like rappers who think mentioning either scientific terms or religious/mythological legends makes them sick.

Gift of Gab does this and he's not a pretentious, really I don't understand where people get the notion that trying to drop knowledge makes you pretentious. Chemical Calesthenics is a song that sounds great, but isn't preachy in any way.
I don't like multis for multis' sake, or trying to show how sick you are by saying it .

Oh?
All rappers brag, but some do too much. If you're sick, we should be able to tell. I don't like rappers who tell stories about stuff they obviously never experienced, like having run ins with the CIA or basically anything Canibus says.

How do you know what they have and haven't experienced?
I don't like bad production or boring beats. I don't like rappers who think they are revolutionaries when they clearly aren't...

What do you consider bad production or boring beats?

With that said try Dessa, One Be Lo, Krit is also very introspective, he takes the generic subject matter of the south and give it an interesting spin, and since you like Kanye give K-os a spin.

"This dude doing this interview wants me to spin a few,
Lyrics while I tie my tennis shoes in the nude
A romantic interlude in a livin’ room,
In an inner tube with a dude with a bit of lube
Fuck that I’m sniffin’ glue, sippin' gin & juice,
And a little bit of paint thinner with my dinner too,
You better pay me for my bars like your rent is due,
Now hurry up and finish dude before I finish you."

Haha I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm just saying what I like.

It can be both mainstream and underground, just like hardcore rap can be both mainstream and underground. That's what I was trying to say, IDC about the style label but the content. Both have dope musicians
To me, concious rap is rappers who basically just try to express themselves and share their personal live through music. They will also address social issues, and I'm perfetly fine with them having some BS songs that are just enjoyable.

Going by your defintion Ice Cube is a conscious rapper and so are a lot of Gangsta rappers in the 90s. Yeah, some more than others, but I typically don't listen to a TON of gangsta rap. I love Game, Ice Cube, 2Pac, Dre, etc. That's just not what I'm looking for in this thread.
The kind of dudes I'm talking about: Common, Lupe, Nas, Rakim, J Cole, Blu, Pharoahe Monch, Kanye, Kid Cudi, Mos Def, etc. They have nice lyrics, and talk real life ish.

Why is it stupid? Because I honestly doubt they have info that is not available to the average American. Yes, they do occasionally highlight hidden issues, but writing a rap song about Free Masons or something isn't my thing. If it entertains you cool, but I don't like it. I've actually read up a lot on conspiracy theories, but I don't want it in my rap.

It's not always bad, but as a general rule I don't like it. You can learn more science from an hour with a textbook than from listening to Canibus' entire discography.
I don't like multis for multis' sake, or trying to show how sick you are by saying it .

Oh? You can tell when rappers are just using big words to have "better" rhymes. I'm all for expansive vocabularies, but it often just doesn't sound natural.
All rappers brag, but some do too much. If you're sick, we should be able to tell. I don't like rappers who tell stories about stuff they obviously never experienced, like having run ins with the CIA or basically anything Canibus says.

How do you know what they have and haven't experienced? haha here you're just being argumentative to be argumentative. I gaurantee that stuff's all fabricated. They aren't lying, it's storytelling I guess, but I find it unimpressive and just boring.
I don't like bad production or boring beats. I don't like rappers who think they are revolutionaries when they clearly aren't...

What do you consider bad production or boring beats?
I was just saying that as a rule of thumb, it wasn't aimed at anyone in particular. Basically, I prefer dope lyrics AND good beats. But, Canibus production is often subpar.

With that said try Dessa, One Be Lo, Krit is also very introspective, he takes the generic subject matter of the south and give it an interesting spin, and since you like Kanye give K-os a spin. Thanks, I've heard some stuff from all of them but I'll check some more stuff out.

And Rainman, I'll check out R-Mean, thanks!

No disrespect to Mos Def or Common Sense but Prince Ea's mind goes beyond that Conscious shit

I'm a big fan of a lot of Prince's stuff, but until he actually has a discography he can't hold a light to either of them.

Sometimes he overdoes it with the scientific/mythological references, but he's dope. I've been on to him for as long as I can remember, like before he was in Vibe or whatever mag he was in.

JMT & AOTP are very introspective, I don't know why you would lump them in with IT and Bus.
