Best concept album

Postby dead prez » Apr 12th, '11, 23:16

Yeah, this is taking into account both the concept used and the execution if it was strictly the concept than probably "Prince Among Thieves". My personal favorite would be A Book of Human Language (though Deltron 3030 comes close).

The album has the same structure as a novel, with each song going in depth describing different facets of life and existance. Topics vary from musing about universal hardships, to going in depth about trivial matters such as a window pane and walls, most of the topics being thought inspiring, he definitely has something to say, it's almost like a philosophy class on audio. Be warned though this isn't for quick skimming that can be done away with, and thrown into the bargain bin, you must give him full attention when he raps otherwise you probably wouldn't enjoy his performance as much.

Also note that he tends to shift to spoken word when he raps and goes in depth, which might turn you off, but really only emphasizes what he's trying to say.

The production is surreal and jazzy which complements his emceeing quite nicely and adds to the eerie atmosphere.

P.S. Class I know you don't like Aceyalone, but I honestly think you would like him since you tend to favor rappers who are thought provoking (Prince Ea) so I don't know thought you would have enjoyed his music.

If an album doesn't have a concept, it's not a very good album. If things are scattered around and the songs don't flow together, then it shouldn't have been made in the first place.

God loves ugly / To all my friends / When life gives you lemons.

These are the 3 best depictions I've seen of an artist taking a concept and elaborating on it throughout an entire album.

God loves ugly: Slug speaks specifically about the ugly nature of human beings throughout almost every song but in different ways and different scenarios.

To all my friends: Stories about friends that have come and gone. Also touching on the fact he considers fans as friends. Friends is used loosely in this EP, but still kept as the main theme throughout every song.

Lemons: Every song talks about the struggles and hardships that life can potentially hand you. Different scenarios and stories are used to illustrate the theme and bring it to life.

IMO, no one touches Slug when it comes to moulding an album around a specific topic. Then taking that topic to the extreme, in both a physical and metaphorical sense.
