I'll at least make a legit case for Charlie lol. His rhyme schemes are real nice on American Tragedy. He's hilarious, I enjoy his punchlines and I generally dont even like punchlines. I even say Eminem's punches are wack lol. His flow is crazy on some songs, and never takes himself too seriously. And since this is 50 ARTISTS and not RAPPERS, I should say that Charlie can sing, rap, play guitar, scream, and produce.

I'll be serious just this once, I was impressed with Charlies rhyming on this album. While Swan Songs was better from a musical standpoint a lot of Charlies rapping was pretty bad if you looked at it technically. On this album he stepped his rapping game up, came with the multis & the punches.

I just made this to fuck with you but I honestly do believe that Slug & Joe Budden are better than Lupe lol. If I didn't I wouldn't have taken so much time with deciding my pick.

Some of the artists in this thread, I don't believe are better than Lupe, but whatever.

Anyways as for my pick, going Satire's route.

Image

Eccentric member of the Wu and the most consistant, arguably the best member. Anyways in terms of storytelling this guy is top notch and doesn't miss a single detail when trying to convey the images in his head, arguably the best storyteller if we're just talking about the execution and not concepts done. He has the perfect voice that lures you in, and the slang he uses in his raps help paint a picture in your head ( see third verse of Impossible).

He's also a much better stream of consciousness rapper than Lupe and has delved into drug concepts with more tact than Lupe, see Supreme Clientele. A lot of people fault him for using "made up slang" in songs like Nutmeg, but supposedly if you payed attention to his earlier raps, than you might find some rhymes that he used in previous songs, which all fit together like a puzzle. It's sort of like Lupe's gift when you listen to his songs many times over and are just starting to understand some off the wordplay he executes, which is satisfying and is the gift that keeps on giving.

Lastly, and this is arguably the most important aspect of being an artist is consistancy and ability to change with styles. It's obvious that most other Wu members fell off during the later 90s, because of inability to switch up styles and rap over different beats. Ghostface is one of the few artists to make beats work through pure passion, very few artists are able to do this (Eminem most of the time he outshines the beat, same for Nas). He was able to dominate through Hardcore gritty Noir sounds that the Wu was basically reknowned for in 96, to being able to switch up to soulful beats that compliment his stream of consciousness style raps in Supreme Clientele, to Rnb, soul and Acid all in one album namely Fishscales.

I guess I'll give lyrics to Lupe (if even that), he's definitely a much better wordsmith.

But Ghost has him beat in Persona, Energy/delivery, storytelling skills, and most importantly consistancy and ability to change with times.

There's a lot of artists who I prefer over Lupe, but I can't really bring empirical evidence that would put them above Lupe other than for subjective reasons.

Anyways up next

Image

If you're a fan of multi syllabic rhyming than look no further, this guy's rhyme patterns (lol) are top notch and he's easily one of the best multi syllabic rhymers in rap next to guys like Pun, Diabolic, Az, Em, sadly he's overlooked by most Hip Hop heads.

He also has one of the best flows that is incredibly smooth and his wordplay is phenemonal, in his first album and second one (which was originally a mixtape that got pushed into an album) he has hints of being a battle mc in him by mostly focusing on clever wordplay, he switches it up on Sono and becomes more of a "conscious" rapper.

Despite him being a top notch mc, he's definitely not for everyone and some may label him as whiney (especially on MOTU), where he constantly critiques the mainstream of being sellouts and lacking original talent. Though he had a point at the time as the mainstream was filled with Jiggy crap, where rappers like P diddy were reigning supreme, just before Eminem really took the nation by storm. Following later albums, most notably SONO, he switches up his style to being introspective (perhaps a bit too much) and talks about various topics like religion, the state of Hip Hop, the black community.

He definitely outshines the production in his albums, though none of them are really stellar to begin with, MOTU having a jazzy sound reminiscing of NY during the Illmatic era. This was off course before the midwest had ny sort of real influence yet, or had a particular sound to them. Project Fetus is his first solo "album", but it feels more like a really put together mixtape, with a bag of rhymes that'll keep you satisfied if you're the type that likes to listen to a rapper shred a beat or believe technicalities>content. His album Sono, is where he really switches up his style and goes full conscious route, but still rips the beats without any hesitation or regard for others.

He has a decent sobering delivery which works well for many of the tracks most notably Decepticons, where he speaks about his past life and betrayals he may have encountered. Though the beats are inconsistant in Sono, some where great, but some have you scratching your head why he picked that beat for said song. Regardless he's also another mc that can make a beat work through mic skills alone, and outshines the beats 90 percent of the time
