let content or the personal views/subject matter of said artist negatively affect your view of their music? Now I'm not talking about subject matter to be exact (well kind off), but I mean if they constantly reference conspiracy theories, their own religion, or they may have hints of being semi racist.

I only bring this up, because I was reading a review of a certain album, and while the review goes very indepth the reviewer only attacks the actual subject matter off the album and not the execution, faulting said album for negatively giving a false image to conscious underground rap. Where all they do is blame others for their failures, and whine about how they aren't in the spotlight.

Personally I try to keep them seperate. Personal feeling I may have towards an artist's beliefs in their music, and mostly focus on how they deliver, but if the artist gets overbearing or preachy and starts spewing garbage that I don't agree with, than it's safe to say it detracts from the overall experience.

The only thing I can think of is Christian rap and I would never listen to someone rapping about God and Jesus so I guess I do.

Yes, if it's ridiculous. If a rapper is clearly some delusional moron who is paranoid of everything, I'll get sick of listening. Some songs are dope and still stupid. Someone showed me a Vinnie Paz song a few weeks ago where he says Obama was born in a test tube and the government poisons the air, but the chorus is great so I've listened to it a good amount since.

He's not preaching religion and it isn't the focus of his music but he's very religious so when he does personal songs it's obviously going to get brought up. It doesn't bother me.

Vinnie Paz doesn't actually believe that stuff happened. He was just thinking of the most ridiculous things he could and putting it in his verses for entertainment purposes.

Yeah, I get what you mean OBL does that a lot too, referencing his religion but that's not the main focus of his music either.

He's still a paranoid twit, and he does believe in stuff like Illuminati or whatever, so I do get sick of him and not take him seriously.

The amount of songs where he talks about stuff like the Illuminati is so few that dismissing him for that opinion is retarded.

I do too, but art is art, I don't know feels critiquing artists for their beliefs that they may incorparate into their music. Perhaps some of it is meant to draw your attention, because said rapper knows his niche. It just feels weird criticizing rappers for what they rap about and not how they rap, almost like those who criticized Eminem for being misognystic and homophobic without addressing the actual music.

its just preference, like if for said person, the lyrics are homophobic, but he aint bothered by that (nobody should be) then he wont judge the music based on that.

but me,im bothered by religion and conspiracy theories,so i judge the rapping on that.

And for those who get offended easily or are homosexual would obviously not take a liking to Eminem's lyrics (granted you really have to take them out of context to call him homophobic), but that's what I feel like some people do when they dismiss certain rappers just because they rap about subjects they don't agree with. I'm guilty of this too btw.
