Big budget videos vs simple videos

Postby stillmatic » Apr 25th, '11, 05:18

Me and a few homies were talking about this a few days a go about how all these rap videos look the same these days, with fast edged cuts and use of heavy colors in videos, most of which are done in front of a green screen compared to other videos which try to keep it simple and just focus on the actual story look so much better.

The best example I can give you is the videos from the classic N1gger album from Nas.

--------------------------------------
The two videos released by Def Jam for the album are below.

Hero

Make the world go round

The three videos released independently by Nas and Rik C are below.

Be a Ni1gger too

Y'all my n1ggas

Sly Fox

I know some people are gonna say that the videos released by Nas seem better because of the song, but ignore the song for a minute and just watch the video.

When will labels learn?

I agree. I honestly never watch MTV and rarely watch vids on youtube, but the 3 Nas did were FAR better. I loved Sly Fox, both the vid and the song. I like independent vids, they have a grittier, more real feel to them. I loved the old Eminem vids like My Name Is and Role Model. I watched Not Afraid and LTWYL once each and never again.

Here's some newish independent vids I've really been feeling lately:

Very simple, I like how Cole walks the whole time while rapping. He does it in Who Dat too. Dope.

I'm sure everyone's seen Yonkers. I love it. So simple, yet so great. Everything, from the cockroach to the black eyes.

One of my favorite vids I've seen recently. I don't even like Chris Webby usually, but the video is superb and the song is great. Such a creepy vid. The Doors sample = :worship:

Great vid by Yela, I love the muted colors and dark nature. Really makes the song for me, I usually only listen to the song with the vid.

Great artistic vid, goes with the vid perfectly.

Great topic.

The best videos IMO are what follow the story of the track,3am by Em is a great example.

Simple videos more than make up for lack of funds with creativity. TBH most music videos of any genre have lost it's spark, it's all boring

I was thinking the same thing the other day when I watched Big Krits' "Dreamin". It's amazing how generic most music videos are when you consider how big their budgets are. A truly great video helps you understand and/or appreciate the song in a new way.
