You Can Dislike Eminem's New Music And Still Be A Fan

So with the leak of Fast Lane, it seems anyone who doesn't think it's that great is being met with the usual "If you dont like his new stuff then you're not a fan and should leave this site lolz" line.

What kind of warped logic is this?!

Just because you don't like his stuff post-Recovery (which really isn't of any exceptional quality) you're not a fan? That stuff is a miniscule of his overall work. It's a ridiculously small amount. If you like the majority of what he puts out sober then surely you have every right to call yourself fan.

Even if you only like his first 3 albums, you still have every right to call yourself a fan and post on this site.

I really don't get this idea that it's fine to praise everything he puts out but not criticise it? As long as you've got yourself a decent argument that makes sense, why not?

When Newcastle United got relegated and I was disgusted with their perfomances, does that mean I can't be a fan anymore? No, I just realised the team was going in the wrong direction and I was eager to see themselves put it right. I still turned up to matches, in the same way I listen to new Em songs. In both cases, I'm worried they're going to be poor, but I still hope they can be great.

(obviously I have more of an attachment to Newcastle United, than to Eminem, but you get my point)


Eminem is my favourite artist of all time. He's a genius. But, right now, his boring content, annoying punchlines, hoarse voice and repetition of subject matter is dissapointing me. Am I not a fan?

Yes, its a case of two groups of people (majority that is) who are completely stereotypical and fail to discuss constructively without resorting to lines such as those you posted. To use the soccer analogy, one United fan might praise anything that Fergie does while another questions him. Both are United fans, just with conflicting ideas on what it means to be a fan and what they think United SHOULD be.

What is even worse though is, "if you dont think SSLP was the greatest/ Rock Bottom is jizz-worthy you are not a real fan." Because he has created so many images (Love-sick poodle, zany Shady, Rock bottom Marshall Mathers, ill-emcee Eminem) its quite stupid to call one facet of him "real" and the other "fake" I'm always like, WTF?! The music I like was still made by the SAME Eminem and if you cant realise that YOU are not the real fan.

I'm not denying that the people who say this aren't fans, they are.

OT: That's one of the things that annoys me about Eminem, being too one dimensional is a problem but so is having all these goddamn different sides because it leaves you expecting one thing & someone else the other. If Em drops a Shady song I'm going to love it & someone else is going to bitch about wanting a emotional song. If he drops an emotional song they're going to love it & I'm going to bitch about it if it's too soft for my liking. He's evolved so many fucking times as an artist & people try using that in his favor, but that honestly seems like a disadvantage to me. In the long run it's good for him because he gets fans who dig emotional shit & then others who dig Shady, but from a fans perspective it's fucked unless you honestly love every piece of material he puts out which I doubt anyone does.
