The family, or rather the child, was being haunted by Lord Voldemort's Death Eaters. More specifically, Prof. Snape. It's the only logical explanation for the movie. Fucking muggles.
I am 100% serious. Did you guys who watched it catch what the 'ghost/demon' looked like? If not, check the scene where he/it comes at the mother when she wakes up in bed and it's pacing outside her window. That motherfucker looks EXACTLY like Prof. Snape. How is that scary? This is my theory:
The boy kind of resembles a younger Harry Potter. Snape was hiding out from The Order Of The Phoenix, in the attic of an abandoned house. These people move in to the house and, of course, they have to disturb him by checking the attic.. Not that he was very good at hiding; (I mean, c'mon, he was making all sorts of noise when he was being a pedo in the babie's room.) So when the boy climbs up into the attic, Snape has flashbacks of young Harry Potter at Hogwarts and he stuns him and throws a paralysis curse on him.
After this, he tries to get the family to leave him alone by 'haunting' them (In reality he's just using a few magic tricks to scare them away).
