It is far from irrelevant. Both --off the top freestyling and writing-- influence each other. You can't become a good freestyler (off the top freestyler) if you haven't written a lot in your life. The more rhymes you write, the bigger your ''rhyme database'' in your head, thus the faster you'll able to string words together on the spot.
It works vice versa, too. The more you freestyle, the more you flex that ''rhyme database'' in your head, which makes it easier for you to write. Rhyming becomes more natural, expressing yourself in a written becomes easier, most freestylers acquire this tendency to find words that rhyme in day-to-day life.
Words, that are relevant in a context, that rhyme come up way faster than ever before, how is that not relevant to writing?
"Truth is limitless in its range; if you drop a 'T' and look at it in reverse, it could hurt."
