I find nothing wrong with these albums:

Nas - Illmatic
Nas - Stillmatic
Eminem - The Slim Shady LP
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Earl Sweatshirt - EARL (the one that probably sticks out of all these but it's the most promising record I've probably ever heard)
Jay-Z - The Black Album

I didn't know until he mentioned it.

That's kind of crazy lol. Maybe he just made it up on spot and is now laughing at people carefully listening to the song trying to find the metaphor.

I don't know.. Doesn't sound like him. I saw the interview, he seemed serious.

Royce Da 59 (Death Is Certain) 2004 :

The Reason i whould call this a masterpiece is because it shows royce in his darkest hour between the D12 Beef and alcohol problems, he finds the perfect beats and mood to run throught the entire album showing his ego powered assult on "Throw Back" to his morning on "Death is certain Part 2".. and "Regardless" is one of the greatist album intro's ever in my opinion :y:

It's the essence of the hip hop culture for me. I've elaborated on it in some other thread, I'm not gonna repeat it, just listen to it and you'll understand.
Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth - Mecca & The Soul Brother
Same.
Eminem - The Eminem Show
Yes, for me it is and I don't care about anyone else's opinion, so there's a 'fuck you' just in case.
Nas - Stillmatic

These albums are just a pleasure to listen. These plus The Rising Tied are albums i dont even want to scrutinize on a technical level. Fucking great production and listenable, AUDIBLE flow.

Liquid Swords
36 Chambers
A Piece Of Strange
Illmatic
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx

I would add Aquemini, but most of the skits at the end of the tracks aren't needed, actually skits are the main reasons I don't include any Em album, Supreme Clientelle or Madvillainy on my list

You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide

As you said, not to be confused with the word classic.

I think there's very few rap albums that are masterpieces. And that is a very strong word that I think needs to be justified on many fronts. And one rap album that without a doubt in my mind, is a masterpiece and which I could argue for being so is...

Image

Again. We're talking masterpiece. And, I've seen people mention what I consider classics but... I mean, I saw Chronic 2001 mentioned for example. Now, a classic? ABSOLUTELY. But A fucking masterpiece? an otherwise typical gangsta rap album aside from Dre's production...

Not in my opinion.

I think that word should be reserved for works of art that defy cliche and go against the grain to such extreme degrees that they blow everything before it to pieces and ooze originality. And, in the case of The Marshall Mathers LP it not only did that but... its paradoxical format and what Em did with it was just absolute reactionary genius.

It was more than an album. It was a statement, and a divisive bombshell.

I also think that it's Em's only masterpiece by the way.

every album I have ever listened to could have been improved in a way. The only album that I have ever heard that I could say was close is Food and Liquor. It excelled at every category and almost all the tracks were classics

I'm gonna say this

Because this is one album that made me think, and is excellent at storytelling. It's by no means my favourite album, but it's one of the most creative ones i've heard.

I don't mean to sound like an asshole but I think that Paper Trail and Recovery are miles from being a master piece

Not necessarily because by that logic, the Monalisa isnt. It just has to be executed well IMO.

Well I don't consider the Mona Lisa a masterpiece either. Just because history says it is, I'm not gonna just 'go along' with a perception. Which is what most people do.

The vast majority of people would just accept the Mona Lisa being a masterpiece but then if you ask them why, they probably wouldn't be able to answer you. I think it's just because it was painted by Leonardo da Vinci. And, some pieces of art just catch accidental attention or the glance of society in a certain light and... just stumble into legacy.

But, in respects to the Mona Lisa or more general art and paintings I'm a philistine so I'm not fully protesting it or saying that's absolute. Just, from an outsider looking in and, I have looked into that painting a little bit but, that's another debate.

But yeah, when I said what you quoted, I suppose I was referring more so to albums. And yes execution is above all else but, unless the execution is so staggeringly unique then, I think there needs to be a lot beneath the surface. To me. To justify that word.

And, something like Chronic 2001, doesn't justify that to me. It's just a classic album but it's not so unique and mind-blowing that the word applies. I think such heavy words can lose their weight if they're slung around too carelessly.
