Will Hip-Hop Be More Understood in 20/30 Years?

Postby MikeNUFC » May 17th, '11, 21:39

I was thinking about how still young a genre hip-hop is the other day and wondered whether time would change the mainstream media/general public's perceptions of it.

When rock was at it's peak, it had similar critics ("it's bad for the kidzzzzz" and "these people are ROLE MODELS!!"), yet these days, many artists who faced controversy (Rolling Stones for eg) are considered music legends/geniuses.

WiIll there come a time when the better mainstream rappers are more highly respected to the extent of rock?

I think it will to an extent. A generation who grew up with hip-hop in the early 2000's when it was at it's, arguably, popularity peak, will be in more prominent positions in the world and will have more of an impact on people's views. Of course, this works both ways - the youth who are influenced by negative stereotypes of the genre today will also play a part.

Thoughts?

Yeah, because all of us will be the grown ups who are controlling everything and can decide things like that.
You think your personal attacks make up for what you lack?

in 20/30 years, hip hop as a genre in music would have already done its task, the labels, critics or whoever are saying such stuff abt it now wont exist and they will be replaced by people who lived the music and/or knew it exists, and know what its really about.
The devil ain't on a level same as him!

Good post and topic, but yeah I think so.

I think it's bullshit that some people stigmatize Hip Hop exclusively as the genre to be misognystic, and promote violence, or act like the figureheads in the genre now are the only ones to be cocky and obnoxious (Kanye West).

Or doofuses that constantly decry rap lyrics while constantly extolling other genres like old school soul, jazz, & blues as being innocuous, while being oblivious to inane shit like this. Never mind the fact that people can actually listen to lyrics entire on musical merit devoid of it's actual content, though many critics do take the lyrics out of context and try to make it worse than it really is.

People need to stop acting like rap/hip hop is the first/only genre to be filled with misogynstic, arrogant, twatish and violent assholes, not that any of this shit has anything to do with the music and should be kept separate. Artistic image and their content shouldn't be interwtwined, and devaluing an artist because he/she has those characteristics is one big ad hominem to begin with. They're artists, not role models.

In short, yes I do think artists like Nas/Eminem/Pac will be placed in high regard in the future with the likes of Elvis/Chuck Berry etc.

Especially considering the Common white house controversy, where some people where "offended" by him because he has "violent lyrics" lyk, wtf?! :confusion: Common is the most hollywood rapper i know!

I hope so. Thing is though, it all depends if the young people now can move on from the "hip hop is dead" movement because if everyone is naming a random underground artist as a GOAT and the only universally acceptable giants are from the 90's (Biggie and Pac) it wont have scope for growth. The only way it can be understood on a broader scale is when the hip hop community itself has more love than hate, tolerance than arrogance.

No. In fact, people will be even dumber in 20-30 years, and will start confusing lyrics with reality...wait, they already do.

Came back to annihilate, the game's in dire straights, as I await
Word on Satan, as I drop, fall to my knees before this Quija board and I pray
Now I lay me down to sleep
I do this shit in my sleep, I’m sleepin' now, imagine if I awake

Man, I really hope it will be.

I'm getting tired of some people judging me because I listen to rap, saying it's bad for me and my behavior. Thing is, It has had zero negative effect on my life, in fact, it has helped me go through many almost unbearable events in the past.

I can definitely see myself still listening to rap in 20 years, so... I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.
