Books You've Just Finished/Want To Read

I just finished Sylvia Plath's "The Bell Jar" and despite not liking books where the main characters are women I liked it a lot. Usually I can't relate to women focused books but anyone who's ever been depressed can relate to this. It's a semi-autobiography in the sense that it was inspired by her life but written for a certain audience. I recommend it highly but if you're already sad I'd hold off, this book could easily make someone commit suicide.

I'm 4/5's through Camus's Stranger which is about an accidental murder and the man's mentality. It's easy to read and focuses on existenialism (I didn't know either lol). It's alright so far.

I'm halfway through "Inherent Vice". I just ordered "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell", so I'll be reading that soon, and I recently finished the entire Youth In Revolt series.

I don't read much, though. The last book I read before Inherent Vice was Clockwork Orange, and before that it was Catcher In The Rye.

@Maybe Catcher In The Rye is on my list, haven't heard of the others.

@Zu 1984 and Brave New World are great. Dystopian fiction as a whole is a great genre. I'd stear away from Ayn Rand though. No book is worth that kind of effort especially when she's just taking communism in a new direction (exaggeration). I actually spent a bit looking for 1491 but couldn't find it in the right format, but Lies My Teacher Told Me is something I'd recommend that's in the same vein. It covers Columbus's enslavement of the Haitians, our history and misconceptions with the indians, and tons of stuff. Great book for the Lowkey fan.

Oh and if anyone is interested in reading The Stranger which I mentioned in the first post the last 10 pages is all you need to focus on. Hell Spark Note the other chapters and you won't lose any content to be honest.

@ Zu: 1984 is great, it has to be one of my fave books so you should definitely check it out besides you got some interesting titles on your list, I'll try to check out some of them. Gonna be hard to find though

I'm currently reading Dostoevsky's 'Crime and Punishment' and will probably start reading Brett Easton Ellis' newest book after.

^ 'Crime And Punishment' was weird. Don't get me wrong, I liked it alot, but sometimes when Raskolnikov was thinking it all over, I was starting to feel paranoid too. And that prostitute, Sonia, man I was feeling so sorry for her. It just wasn't right.
But in general, great book. Read anything else by Dostoyevski?

I haven't finished it yet so I don't know what's gonna happen to Sonia yet haha. But yeah the book really sucks you in at certain points, and Raskolnikov is really one of the most interesting characters in literature I've read so far.

What I do find pretty confusing at times are the names. When a character in the book is the subject of discussion they always use different names. It's probably a russian thing but that confuses the fuck out of me.

And yeah, Raskolnikov is fascinating. At some point he was right, I mean that old woman was a bitch and was just trying to rip people off, so theoretically he did something.. not quite good, but he eliminated a bad person, right? But it's still a murder.

I don't remember the book that well, now that you've mentioned it, I might read it again this summer. I don't remember the end, so thanks, now I'm gonna spend the entire day trying to remember what happened.

I read a 4th of Crime And Punishment and just kind of stopped. A plan on finishing it at some point but it's crazy you mentioned the names because I also noticed that. It really made everything hard to follow in my head when everyone's name is just an unpronouncable jumble of letters.

I actually downloaded that Jonathan Strange book after reading what it was about but I couldn't make heads or tails of Inherent Vices...something about the rock genre?

Currently reading The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie who is a surprisingly good writer for the most part. Quite funny.
