Re: The Reunion

Three out of my last five posts - on this forum - have been about this particular song, that should tell you how much I enjoy it. It's my favorite track, no doubt, since Recovery, and it probably rates in my Top5 since his comeback.

So... we see that Em really still has the potential of making great songs... Question is, why doesn't he make more 'The Reunion'-type of songs? Well... It seems as that either;

(i) I'm in the minority... I.e. most fans doens't like this song, and the majority like the screaming/"shot voice" Em.... (which sounds unlikely, IMO). What's more likely, is;

(ii) that Em doesn't actually know that his fans like this type of songs... I mean, look, Recovery was blessed by a great amount of people... pre-Recovery, most of the fans (us) were complaining about the lack of feeling/emotion Em put into his songs... And... he listened, we got Recovery... But, as we've witnessed since Recovery, Em has really been over-doing what he seems to interpret as motion into the songs...

We (the fans) need to reach out to Paul or Royce, let them know that 'The Reunion' is, by far, the best track on this album. Or, at least one of everyone's favourites... And tell them, what we like about this song... This might seem like bitching/complaining to some... but fact is, the nowadays Em, listen to what his fans got to say, and he want to deliver the absolute best he can...

If Em were to make 10-15 songs with this voice/flow/rhyming/wit/non-screaming/non-shot voice... It'd be a classic to a lot of people...

That's me rambling... Any thoughts?

^Personally, I really like the "screaming", as long as it fits with the song. If it's an angry/emotional song, like LTWYL or Take From Me or INAD, it works, and it adds something to the song. But there are a few songs where he uses that voice and it doesn't really fit.

Has anyone else noticed Em's "that's what she said" line in Reunion? It's right after [well, partially during] Royce's swagger line.

Meh. An okay song with a great hook.

I feel he could write stuff like this in his sleep and this kind of material was done much better in the Relapse-era. Thinking specifically of "Same Song & Dance".

People are just obsessed with his old voice lmao. I think he could rap about anything in that voice and people are so nostalgic and desperate for his old flows that it'd be their favourite.

For me, songs like "Welcome 2 Hell" and "Above the Law" are way more entertaining. I prefer more structure and faster, or more energized flows. Makes it more hyper and surprising.

Amadeo wrote:But for me, The Reunion was the best song of the bunch because at least they tried to do a story-telling/concept song. I don't think I've heard Eminem do a fictional story-song since Drips (or One Shot 2 Shot but I try to suppress that song from memory).

Well, it is annoying that they didn't come up with any real concepts or stories outside of that. Lots of little concepts or nods to ideas within their lyrics but, never fully committed to a full song. Just a lot of random spitting.

So, I appreciate it for that fact but I find say "Above the Law" way more entertaining.

Amadeo wrote:I feel like Eminem could write some of the Relapse songs (like Must Be The Ganja, for example) in his sleep. But he hasn't really tried to tell a (fictional) story throughout an entire song since his prime.

What about "Same Song & Dance"? it's not a single story, it's like... he has a few victims in it. But, when he gets into it "the first victim I had, she was a big one..." he tells it start to finish... "my second victim was even bigger than the first..."

I think that song is his best attempt at storytelling since return. Even though like you say, he hasn't really attempted it. But, the writing is SS&D is pretty great to me...

You hold that pill any longer it'll get sentimental value
Come on toots give me the Valium, alley-oop, I'll slamdunk it in your mouth till you puke
And just as soon as you pass out in your Alphabet Soup
I'm 'bout to make a new outfit outta you
A new outfit? shit I'll make a new suit outta your shoot

That's not the best example of rhyming, or structure in the song of course but, I just really like that part. He hits upon his old wit with "just as soon as you pass out in your Alphabet Soup" for me. It just has that old spark where, it's nuanced and, 'in' the situation. And specific. Just a funny, odd little detail that most wouldn't think of mentioning. And, Alphabet Soup... for Britney

Amadeo wrote:I feel like Same Song & Dance is three separate stories, one for each verse. He doesn't really connect them and the stories don't really converge like they do in The Reunion.

Yeah it is three sep stories, but I think the storytelling of each verse, or the 'storytelling elements' of it are done to much better effect than "The Reunion".

Amadeo wrote:Eminem (or I guess he's the "Evil Twin" in this song) finds the fat trailer park girl on the road, then jack-knives the car, and crashes in front of the club, and then Royce (who is in the club), goes to the front door and meets him out the front and sees Eminem with the fat girl.

That kind of detail in story-telling isn't that impressive, but it's detail nonetheless. Anyway, Same Song and Dance > The Reunion. Eminem's lyrics/flow are still sloppy as fuck on Reunion.

Well, I'll listen to it again as, I've played it a few times and I just wasn't that impressed. Just seemed like a lazy / talk Em flow with too much swearing (which sometimes ruins verses for me) and, just seemed, well as you say - sloppy.

There wasn't a moment where I went "wow that was nice" in respects to the flow, or story, or ideas or anything in the song. Which, I did for most the others on the EP.

I'll listen again though to hear the storytelling properly. Sounded meh to me though.

My favourite song from the EP.

Love the flow/voice, and the chorus is incredible. Definitely the best Eminem hook he has done for a very long time.

He needs to do his own hooks more often.

Great song, hook is nice. I feel like they committed to a concept more than people are picking up on. Em is Evil, pretty apparent in his treatment of the fat trailer park bitch. Royce is bad, connotation implying cool. Nice car, being a g, fucking bitches.

The song actually does tell a story, someone would be dumb not to pick up on it...they basically tell the tale of their "reunion." Song is a classic, it's the Em I want to hear more of. And Royce handles the storytelling pretty well, too.

Hmm, that part must have went over my head. Let me listen to the song again..

EDIT.

Yes you are right, it seems they do meet up towards the end of the song. Anyways, what I am saying is on the way to the "reunion" they are both very in character. Em is very EVIL. and Royce is very BAD. Bad as in, yeah he is a terrible person, but there is some cool sprinkled in there.

Yes, I know, it's a great concept song, and I really wish that Em does more like it, or that BME do more like it if, by any chance, they make a full LP. This song is so great because Em is actually sticking to a story, and the vast improvement makes it a standout.

I don't know if I am just getting carried away because this is fresh, and hasn't long leaked, but I'd say this is up there with the very best BME tracks. Certainly one of my favourite BME tracks of all-time.

I'll have to comment in about 6 months though, to see if I still feel like this.

But without a doubt the best song on the EP for me.

I want this voice/flow more often from Em

Wow really? I can't believe how many people are raving about this track SO much.

It's so meh to me. It's got a class hook but it's a pretty aimless / silly story and isn't told amazingly well, and the flow(s) and rhyming aren't incredible either. I honestly think it's just being overrated because Em isn't yelling or using an accent on it and people are nostalgic.

For me, it's nowhere near "Bad Meets Evil" or "Scary Movies", or "Nuttin' to Do". Lyrically, or conceptually or flow-wise, they're just other-worldly in comparison.

Em..Evil, is following his story line with the girl (fans) who don't like Relapse - which fits the chorus, breaking his fans heart with his music.

And Royce, Bad, is following his own story line. At the end they reunite. Bad Meets Evil again and they're back to business. :worship:

I REALLY noticed it while I was doing my review for the EP, and I was analyzing everything they were saying and I realized the entire concept. I love it.
