Originality vs Skill

Postby dead prez » Jun 10th, '11, 05:47

Would you rather hear someone who has rhymes for days and varying flows, but has no creative bone in their body, or someone that has innovative concepts, and their own unique sound which can't be replicated?

And yeah, I know the two are congrous, and you can't fully separate them but choose one. And yes there are a lot of skilled musicians that aren't creative in any way, but most innovative musicians are skilled to a degree.

They both go hand in hand, but if I had to choose probably originality, but some skill is needed other wise the music would be utter trash.

And like always those who try something innovative run the risk of it completely sucking, but that's expected. I will sayy however trying to be original just for the sake of being original is counterproductive.

I hate these questions because I wouldn't listen to someone that doesn't have either.

Both :p
I'd prefer originality but if they did it with little to no skill, then I'd dislike that. But very skilled with the same repetitive, uncreative content would be horrible too. But from the two extremes you're asking, if I HAD to choose one, I'd go with originality.

Yeah, they go pretty much hand in hand but I prefer originality. There's no point in listening to someone who sounds like everybody else.

Brother J has his own unique style on X Clan's debut album and that's what makes it such an everlasting classic. He is not exactly talentless though....

So the first person is highly skilled but sucks dick at being original but the second person is highly original and decently skilled? No brainer.

Well yeah, you have to have at least some skill, cause originality without any skill is pointless, but than again so is being highly skilled but having no quirks of your own.

They're hard to truly separate, but this is a hypothetical.

I think most people would pick originality, but the way I see it is you could go longer without skill, but in the long run if your music sucks because you can't spit, than it'll hurt. Originality might attract first and stick out more.

Originality.
If a song has no concept whatsoever, and is just random rhyming with no story behind it, I can't listen to it. Same with if a concept is used over and over again. That's why I don't listen to crappy songs like "girl, lemme feel on yo body". Which is also why I don't listen to Lil Wayne, Lil B, Lil F, Lil Fag, Drake, etc.

I would say originality over skill but that's a very difficult question, since I could barely listen to a rapper who developed an originality & sucks at skill, imo a parallel run would be the best, but If I couldn't pick both, I would still sticking around the originality no matter how the rapper sucks at skills... :y:

Way I see it is if you had to compare them originality would be water and skill would be food. You can go longer or catch people's eye quicker with being innovative and original, but you're just hurting yourself in the long run if you have no skill at all.
