Is Goblin musically one of the most original albums ever...

Postby Hiphopdane » Jun 20th, '11, 23:09

in hip hop?

Personally I struggle to think of a similar album, and that's what I appreciate the most about this album. I know originality doesn't necesarrily mean it's good but in this case it is. A shame the lyrics aren't all that cus the musical foundation and vision really are commendable.

Also, I'm quite surprised how coherent it is. I mean, a lot of producers struggle to compose a full album that actually feels like an album and not just a bunch of random songs thrown together more or less.

Its definitely a style not for everyone. Think hes great and pretty original. By the throat has my vote w/ class but this is a very good album with a much different sound than you're used to hearing. Like I said hs def not for everyone. If you didnt like yonkers then its obvious the style just isnt for you. Not sayin thats a bad thing people like wat people like. Hard to top eyedea in originality tho grunge rap/ poetic rap> shock value in originality imo

I havn't heard that album so I don't know if you mentioned it cus it is musicially similar to Goblin. It seems like you misread my post though cus I said one of the most, not the most.

It's not even one of the most, I wouldn't even call it original, like Tom said, many people have done that style before him.

Well, still somewhat original since it isn't following any trend or trying to fit in. I'm not sure how many similar albums that actually are out there but after a few quick listens I'll admit that the Eyedea album, or whoever made it, sounds the same more or less.

I understand why the music isn't for everyone (no album is) but damn, the album is like a long journey in hell ha ha. Transylvania is probably my favourite beat on the whole album; that haunting melody and those chaotic drums are lovely :y:

I watched a video of one of their shows the other day, and that was probably the closest thing I've ever seen to pure rocknroll in hip hop. I love how there is a place for stuff like this in not only hip hop but mainstream hip hop.

I haven't actually listened to Goblin, but isn't the point of making an album for it to be original?

For example when 36 Chambers came out, it was original, wasn't it?
On their initial release Enter the Wu-Tang, the group fortified their position in the rap world with a unique poetic take on dreary situations growing up on the streets of New York.

With slightly psychopathic notions and a knack for drug dealing and robbery, this group of nine sensational MCs debilitated the mainstreams idea of hip-hop music and held the creative doors open for countless rappers

Along with The Chronic, which many people think 'revolutionised' G-Funk and the Westcoast by all accounts, a game changer.

These are two obvious examples and there are countless others, but at the time they were released they were original and unique, but now there are many albums which resemble them and show influence from them. Just because an album is "original", doesn't mean that it's good, and it's hard to get the right balance of the two
Fuck a sig, i go accapella.
