Lowkey's Hip-Hop Ain't Dead > Nas' Hip Hop Is Dead

Postby MikeNUFC » Jun 23rd, '11, 18:42

Lowkey

Nas

Better rhyming, more enjoyable and less of a gimmick (no offence Nas). Lovely switch of the concept.

What do YOU think?

I preferred Nas' track tbh out of the two.

Lowkey is definitely in the top 25 UK rappers though. (all-time)

Currently top 15

That's class.

Lowkey is a very intelligent lyricist. And awesome. I still haven't listened to his album, all I've heard from him is freestyles. His 'in the booth' session is amazing. Also, the idea of hip-hop being alive in his basement is and the way he communicated it all is nice.

I think overall Nas' is still more enjoyable to listen to just because of the way it's put together. As, it was the original so... I may be unable to shake that bias of hearing it in that condition first. Lowkey's kinda still sounds like he's just spitting over Nas' song.

Which he is but, what I mean is... it doesn't sound like a new, complete song, doesn't sound as 'correct' or proper as a song to me. But yeah his lyricism and everything is better. More intelligent. And more realistic, as what he's saying is the truth.

I'm judging the songs on the thread, not their whole discographies.

I know but the whole idea of "Nas = Better Music, but lacking on lyrics" had me cracking up.

Prefer Nas' version by quite a bit, not to say that Lowkey's version wasn't good. The rhyming was better I guess, but Nas just had more spark in him in that song, and felt like the song had more of a purpose or was more relevant for lack of a better word.

He may seem embittered by parading around the fact that Hip Hop is dead or it may even come off as gimmicky, but I'm pretty sure Nas was simply playing Devil's Advocate. Mostly he was stirring up discussion over an issue that needed to be addressed, by being controversial. I mean do you think he'd get attention if he simply titled the album/song "Hip Hop isn't up to it's old standards"? That said it does piss me off how people who have no idea what the fuck they're talking about take Nas' word literally and are too lazy to actually search for some quality Hip Hop that's not on the radio.

Lowkey's was good but it just felt like someone else rapping over a classic beat.

I only said (and here i'll repeat, in an extended way) Lowkey had better lyrics and rhyming on this song .. but overall Nas' version is more enjoyable to listen to. Never said Nas' lyrics sucked nor did I say Lowkey's music sucked.

I think he said that because you're probably the first person he witnessed to actually praise Nas for his music and not lyrics, generally people percieve Nas as only a lyricist who's generally boring, is what I'm guessing.

As a song , I like Lowkey's better. It does have better rhymes and is flipped well.

However, you have to keep in mind that Nas' song was the first single from his album. It had to send out the message of what his album was about. Plus the song was changed about 50 times by Nas so that Def Jam would release it. That and Will.I.Am was the producer.
The New York Times - "Lloyd Banks may have stealthily become the most important rapper in New York".

Prefer Nas for reasons stated above.

However, it was real funny how after the video, the next song on the YouTube playlist is Soulja Boy's Kiss me through the phone.
