Please give me guys like Kanye, Drake, The Weeknd???

Postby FreeSpeech » Jul 1st, '11, 20:56

TBH, the SH/BME/"lyrical" rap is getting played out to me. Screw punchlines, forget multis.

I'm BY NO MEANS saying Drake or Ye are bad rappers, but I'm looking for some more "artistic" and indie-music influenced stuff like MBDTF, Drakes new stuff (Dreams Money Can Buy, Marvin's Room, Trust Issues), and The Weeknd.

I really can't think of anyone who compares. I want great production (more music as opposed to just rap beats). Any suggestions? And not ish like Atmosphere please.

Yeah big fan of both. It's hard to put my finger on what I'm looking for, but basically ish that doesn't need the rapping to be dope and has phenomenal production. Kinda like indie music with a hip hop vibe (MBDTF had a huge indie influence, Bon Iver, Aphex Twin, tc.). I'm browsing Datpiff, I'll add anything i find.

And yeah Lello, B.o.B. is definitely along the lines of what i want. Songs like Put Me On :worship:

Other dope guys who are kinda what I want are Cudi, Tyler, Frank Ocean. I already know all of OF.

Lello wrote:I don't like Drake's singing at all, but when it comes to Kanye West, I do agree, I'd listen to yay 24/7, would rather listen to him (who btw have great mic skill), then listening to pure lyrical rap, MBDTF is in my top 5 fav albums ever

and word @da saying lupe, never knew you liked him

and yeah @da, blu is amazing.

@FreeSpeech, I'm like a billion% sure you've checked out B.o.B''s discography, but in case you haven't, you WILL fall in love

I think F&L is a classic and i like the cool,i HATE lasers though, and ironically since the album is his most commercial and its basically atlantic records using lupe's anme and voice, the single is the best track on the album,Words I Never Said is dope.

and yea Below the heavens is one of the best rides in hip hop, pure dopeness, umm i got to suggest some to freespeech though.

Check out pharoahe monch if you havent,he is lyrical but he is also artistic and he sings on some tracks, you will find him very dope.

oh and i checked out Drake's fear track, its iight, ima give So Far Gone a DL soon.

and slug is a good rapper but i think hes boring, check out joey if u want to get REALLY depressed.

LOL thanks though. I do like Atmosphere, but that's not what I'm looking for.

Yeah, I love Desire, I've definitely checked out Monch. Joe Budden puts me to sleep.

As for Drake, I really suggest Comeback Season instead.
And don't sleep on him as a rapper, he can come very dope.
On Fear, he rhymes:
We ignore feelings here/premature millionaires. That's a 6 syllable multi he just tossed out, he can (could) honestly rap circles around Wayne.

I don't hate you at all, you do nothing that annoys me at all other than randomly PMS and powertrip and ban me for doing what everyone else does or remotely insulting you. So yes, I hate that because it fucks up the forum and makes me hesitant to even write at all.

And if you like Drake's last few tracks, you'll probably love The Weeknd. Let me know if you know anyone like what I'm looking for. people take this forum beef shit way too serious, all I want is to listen to good music and randomly laugh at Embase for suggesting he was butt raped. That's the American Dream.

I wish I could give you a more established artist, but since I can't remember any, try this dude:

http://www.youtube.com/user/crucial101

Listen to some of the shit on his channel, and if you like what you're hearing, download his mixtapes.
Links are in the 'About Me' section.

The mixtapes are great, and possibly the closest thing I've heard to the style you're looking for. :y:

Been doing this for more than a quarter century, I'm just numb...

Actually, i blame OneMic for not checking this guy earlier. No, he's barely as emotional as the guys you named but damn... his production is incredible. Let 'Em have it just destroys my speakers.

Lello wrote:so you think I don't really love hopsin? you think I don't really love rhyme asylum? you think I don't hate em's new voice/delivery and his post-recovery tracks? you don't think I'm in love with relapse and prefer it ten times more than recovery? cause these are my own opinions, if you don't believe it, it's just denial

No, you like all of that but it doesnt take much to share such opinions as it is in tandem with a good proportion of the forum. But, Lasers being preferable to F&L is uncharted territory!

I'm at a completely similar position in that I could give less of a fuck about punchline/multi cramming wordplay/ esque rap, and am trying to venture out more into the creativity side, artists with originality or uniqueness, kind of hard to describe, but I get what you're saying. A few of the rappers I would have recommended would have fit the bill as "lyrical" rap, but aren't the full product and don't really have that great of beats or aren't really artistic, which in the long run doesn't do much for me.

One rapper that I would defintely reccomend right now would be Edan, who's sort of like a cross between Eminem and The Beastie Boys, but tends to sample the shit out of producers, so if you like to play guess that sample, than I guess you'll like him. Sorta reminds me of Mf Doom with the emphasis he puts on his production.

Favorite song from him would be Mic Manipulator
Torture Chamber

He sounds different on a lot of songs though, these were some of his most accessible, I could see you hating his other songs though.

I'd recommend K-os and K'naan but I'm pretty sure you listened to them already.

Shad is great, definitely give all his three albums a listen. He has that Indie feel, and can actually blend Rock/Rap without falling flat on his feet, and actually sound genuine meaning it's not just a gimmick made for would be Hip Hop fans who have no clue about the genre and just happen to be dicking around. He can rap but he's not a multies only rapper, and his delivery is pleasant, I guess.

New School Leaders
Out of Love
At the same time- Pretty nice introspective track, I think you'll like it actually.

Each song great songs from his albums in chronological order, only complaint I have against him is that he might remain stagnant and formulaic meaning he's not going to really switch up his style.

I was about to recommend POS and Dessa, but you said no Atmosphere type rap, so...

Uh and Das Racist I guess, I love the song in my sig, mostly cause of the beat.

Oh and I'm actually not to keen on Blu :/

I haven't given him a proper spin, and I know that he has quite a fanbase here, but I'm not a fan of his voice at all, and I hope his content isn't mostly comprised of introspective ramblings, I like when rappers get personal, but I don't like it when they turn it into a soap opera, than they can piss off. And finally I don't really like mixtape rappers, and haven't heard that much positive shit about him other than this place, this other forum I frequent trashes him beyond belief, let's just leave it at that.

Uh reading FS's second post, I can't help but feel like he's bet on focusing on the production aspect of music, trying to find artists who's style completely mirrors Kanye's or Drake's (eh) isn't easy.

But since you tend to be more about the music than the overall lyrics, give Black Milk's AOTY a spin, since it's an audiophile's dream, the rapping is decent street shit but the focus is on the production, I actually think this album rivals MBDTF in terms of beats, even though they're different types of beats, but in terms of complexity.
Black and Brown
Warning

K'naan, who I mentioned in my previous post, though I never seen you bring him up, so fuck it I'm mentioning him. His voice is either take it or leave it, but his first album Dusty Foot Philosopher is great musically, conceptually, and artistically. You really have to understand his past though, or he might come of as pretentious in it.

The song in my sig is a given,

Dusty Foot Philosopher

Smile

And I'll just leave off with Nicolay if you want to just listen to beats

His content isn't all introspective shit but that's where he shines at. He has as many albums as mixtapes btw. 4 albums and 4 mixtapes.

Joey is very hated AND loved on the web. He's one of the most famous "internet" rappers. Many people just hate Joe because of his arrogant and cocky attitude tbh. Plus he beefs with a fuckload of people and he beefed with Wu-Tang.

Check Mood Muzik 3-4, Halfway House & Padded Room out if you haven't. Satire, Block and mcZu love him if that helps.

@FreeSpeech, does Lauryn Hill match what you're looking for? I mean, she sings AND she raps. Her production may not be what you're looking for so I guess not. I honestly think that Chris Brown's album F.A.M.E. could be an option. It has dope production, amazing singing and a little bit of rapping from the features and even from Chris. I really don't know what else to recommend since there's not a lot of artists that match your criteria.
