Drake vs. The Weeknd

Postby FreeSpeech » Jul 1st, '11, 20:26

I've seen a few posts regarding The Weeknd (who I've had on replay for weeks) and Drake.
Examples:
mcZu wrote:Drake, grab a pen and a pad and start taking notes. Because this is how you're supposed to do it...

dR3 wrote:Good to see that even Abel himself noticed that Drake is trying to... let's say... "copy" his style and decided to teach him a lesson, lol.

dR3 wrote:I find it kind of annoying though, trying to steal Weeknd's thunder in a way.

Let's get some shit clear. NONE of you, if you don't live in Toronto, would know of The Weeknd without Drake. They're both from TO. Drake is the sole reason Weeknd has hype. Drake WAS the first to use this sing/rap style (in today's mainstream, I mean), just because Weeknd is influencing him for the better is not bad at all. Did you all know that Drake is the one who made Weeknd popular? Google Drake's blog, tell me what ad is on the page. What is it? Weeknd's mixtape. He isn't a YMCM artist, Drake's just helping out a friend. The Weeknd has multiple spots on Drake's new album. The Weeknd's tape barely had any listens before Drake blasted his name out to his own fans.

I personally love Drake/The Weeknd's styles, and I think it's a dick move for people to give Drake shit when he's the sole reaon they've even heard House of Balloons.

If all you've heard is Drake's radio/YM feature shit, then yes. But his lesser known stuff is amazing for what it is. I love his more R&B songs, and his rap songs like Fear are awesome. I don't think he's a crazy rapper, neither does he. It's his music that's awesome. I love his new chill stuff, very unique and refreshing. Don't judge YMCM Drake, that Drake is polluted by the current Wayne. He used to barely use the YM punchline.

The Weeknd isn't rap, he's, IDK actually. I don't wanna say R&B since he is nothing like the R&B that you would think of (Chris, Trey, etc.). Listen to Glass Tables on youtube (all the way through, it's like 2 tracks) it's so damn good. If you like it, get his tape off Datpiff. Very dope, listen all the way through, I love it but don't expect all (or many) of you to.

Well, just listen to this starting at 3:30, he kinda raps. If you don't like it, you won't like him.

There's a boob on the cover if that's any incentive :coffee:

Honestly, if you don't like singing, Drake isn't your guy. So Far Gone is good, but I don't think you'll like him TBH. Listen to the recent songs I mentioned. Bump Comeback Season instead, try Barry Bonds Freestyle or Fear off SFG.

Drake did not put me on The Weeknd, Slimm (a member of this forum) did. Slimm gave me a download link to House Of Balloons, not Drake. If they are friends, good for them, if Drake has been advertising for The Weeknd, then great, but Drake did NOT put me on The Weeknd.

Drake the first to use the sing/rap style in the mainstream? Lauryn Hill ring any bells?

Bottom line, Drake noticed the succes The Weeknd has with HIS style (because their styles are different) and decided to copy some of it and mend it in his own style. There is really nothing wrong with that, because I really like Marvin's Room and Trust Issues, however, I'm afraid that people will now think that The Weeknd is copying Drake's style, which is not true. I've been following Drake since his mixtape days, and I've been following The Weeknd now for a while, and their styles are not the same, they might have some similarities, but they are far from the same. The Weeknd sings on RnB/Dubstep/Melodramatic instruments, whereas Drake does his thing over RnB/HipHop instruments.

I've never visited Drake's blog or whatever in my life. I found out about Abel through Zu and Slimm and immediately loved his music.

if you listen to anything from drake make sure it's So Far Gone

that could have been an album on it's own it's waaaaaaay better than Thank Me Later

his Heartbrake Drake mixtapes aren't bad either. Imo he was much better before he signed to YMCM.
