yeah...Windows 7 cant work smooth on 512MB ram, even with 1GB you could expect some lagging if its constantly on or if you`re gaming..

Ubuntu is cool but I haven't had a serious enough issue with Windows to make the switch worth it.

I'd been using it with Windows for 3 years, until I made a complete transition (deleted Windows ) to Bodhi Linux last month. You think Ubuntu is fast? BodhiLinux is on a whole other level; Having my old computer boot and be ready in only 30s is nothing but a miracle if you ask me lol. Plus there's barely anything on it you can't customize.

It can also boot from CD. You might want to use Ubuntu first though. It's kinda odd for a first time user, but eventually, it pays off

Btw, It's a lightweight distribution so you'll have to download most of the software. I think it only came with notepad and a web browser, lol. But you can get most of the extra software (GIMP, Office, etc) from their website.
