"When Life Gives You Lemons" the album by Atmosphere

Postby WakeUpShow » Jul 10th, '11, 04:25

is the greatest album I've ever heard. I've heard it in total probably 4-5 times so far and my mind is just blown. Slug's concepts such as "The Skinny" and "Your Glass House" are mind boggling genius. His voice is smooth on the ears and his flow never stumbles. His rhyming isn't annoyingly over complex but never too simple. Throughout the album, he shows his knack for writing hooks and bridges. "You" and "Puppets" are the best examples of this. He really knows how to tap into the listener's emotions with heartfelt songs such as "Yesterday" and "In Her Music Box". He always keeps the lyrics interesting and poetic. He's one of the few rappers I've heard that sounds NATURALLY poetic. Ant's production is beautiful in spots, haunting in some, joyfully catchy in others and incredibly fresh and unique throughout. I gave the album God Loves Ugly out and wasn't as floored with it. If you love hip-hop you NEED to check this album out. Props to class for suggesting it.

Don't get me wrong, Atmosphere's dope and it's a dope album, but the concepts are kinda overhyped TBH. It really isn't THAT hard to come with.

And the Glass House/Iraq thing is stupid as hell IMO. Reaching as hell. Did you know Em's Crack A Bottle is an allegory for apartheid in South Africa? Basically the same thing :facepalm

@Free I guess I agree about YGH, but The Skinny is genius in it's execution.

@C.R.E.A.M I agree from what I've heard

@DA But that just ain't him nikka! He's a poet. But if you like multies and good flow he still has that.

Yet no one has ever come up with the concepts that he has (The skinny, Your Glasshouse). Every concept Slug talks about is unique. If they're so easy to come up with, why is Slug the only one to ever do it so masterfully? C'mon, you listen to lil wayne religiously... Fuck outta here.

4:30-5:00. Slug talks about the use of allegory in his songs. Specifically naming The Skinny and Your Glasshouse. There's no reaching, just because your favorite rappers have no idea what the word 'allegory' means.

There's another interview that I can't find, where he goes more in to detail with explaining his views on the the WOT in relation to that song (Your Glasshouse). In this interview he gives a brief outline of it.

Quit fucking trying. KYS.

ON TOPIC: Lemons is my favorite rap album, followed by Seven's travels. Slug's storytelling is beyond belief. I'd argue that no one in music, let alone hip hop, could tell a story as well as Slug does; or execute the topics that he touches on.

I was literally logging on just to say this. Trying to Find A Balance seems like something more along DA's path.

After that, download You Can't Imagine. Imo, it's the closest Atmosphere has been to that general "hip-hop" sound. Since he said he likes Lupe/Blu/Eyedea, there's no way he can't get into these albums.

Always Coming Back Home To You is a top 20 Atmosphere song. Listen to that.

That being said, I like Seven's Travels but there's about a handful of tracks on there that even I skip every play through.

I can already tell from the first track that it's a lot different from his last 2 albums.

I agree it's great. I can say for me this is one of those albums that doesn't really have a weak track. Always loved the piano use in Atmosphere's music. Marvelous storyteller.

Its so crazy to me to see people go on and on about budden and all these other cats but never listened to atmosphere and eyedea etc. my first "umderground" album I ever bought was sevens travels. Trying to find a balance was the first atmos song I ever heard and is so fuckin dope. Hes a ver versatile rappers and is so overlooks by rappers with mediocre storytelling and emotion its sickening
