That's a silly thing to say and way to think.
It's art, there is no right or wrong, or rules. You can go anywhere, it's infinite and the only reason any true artist should do what they do, is to satisfy themselves.
So "to understand what he's doing
wrong" makes no sense. If he loves what he's doing, then it's right. Period. An artist should make art they love and likeminded people will love it too.
To change your art for people who dislike what you're doing, aka people who are not likeminded... is fucking retarded and backwards. And compromising for people who don't think like you or are not on the same page as you at X time, so you shouldn't be concerned about anyway.
The only time Eminem makes bad music is when he's trying to please people other than himself. With the silly
Encore tracks, it's quite clear he had grown out of that stuff but felt like people expected it from him, so right there - he was trying to appease what he THOUGHT people wanted. Instead of just doing exactly what he wanted. Yes, even when he was good on
Encore he wasn't as sharp lyrically, but the serious tracks are still clearly the best. And good.
And I like
Recovery, and most of the material is amazing. But the only bad elements to the material ie. the production or hooks are obviously because he's trying to please people he felt he alienated, or appeal to a new generation, again... not doing exactly what he wants. He's trying to second-guess himself, and please others before himself. Biggest mistake a true artist can ever make.
He had the totally right idea with
Relapse when he said he's just going to do whatever HE wants to do again, and make it for himself, and fuck what anybody thinks. But then he went back on it. As deep down, I think he's a little needy and couldn't handle the criticism and reaction
Relapse got, and was probably pissed off at critics saying he was a has-been or, implying it.
Either way, shouldn't listen to anybody but himself. No artist should.
