I would think that they could use higher quality speakers if they were powered.
I mean, there are better headphones out that don't use them, from my understanding. So I can only guess that it's for the pumped up bass tones. Then again, I haven't really looked into them.

But the output of these headphones is limited to the output of the source. In other words, passive speakers can't play any louder than the headphone jack feeds out. Beats have amplification, they can be set to a louder volume than other headphones.
I also understand that they have built in sound-cancelling circuitry. I would have to look more into that to know whether or not that's electrical noise or what.
