Like when I hear Relapse I think of the reds and blacks from the album. It's very dark.

When I hear Encore, I think of the blue tones and think it's more loose and mellow.

Etc.

It's really weird and the album covers definitely affect the way I see (or hear?) the music in my head when it's playing.

Going into even more details with this, look how I even see it sometimes when I think and listen to the albums;

The Slim Shady LP is purple, blue. Mysterious and shady

The Marshall Mathers LP is done classically. Blacks, greys, browns. Plain and simple. Straightforward, gritty, no flashiness.

The Eminem Show is red. Loud, heroic, outspoken crimson.

Encore is blue, cool. Laid back, lazy.

Relapse is dark red and black. Horrific, scary, evil.

Recovery is bright, colorful, healthy.

Well yeah me too and that's why an out of place song to me is so apparent on an Eminem album. As each one is so sharply defined by colour.

So if a song doesn't fit that colour / tone, it just sounds absurd and wrong.

So... like you say, Relapse conjures up those dark colours of the cover and due to the content also. Which is why when I hear "Beautiful" it sounds ridiculous, as although it's depressive and arguably dark, the chorus conjures up brighter images, just does not fit.

I can't think of a single song on The Eminem Show where that's true though. Every song works. Every song makes me think of red too. "Business"? = red. "Without Me"? = red. Red, red, red. I can't quite explain what I mean either beyond it simply reminding me of the colours due to the covers and artwork being in those colours... it's almost like colours begin to become sounds in your head. Almost like they mix and sounds connect to colours.

I don't know how aware of these kinds of ideas or concepts Eminem is, or unless he's just sort of, subconsciously influenced by his own music to think of these colours. But take Recovery for example - it's all light and breezy colours, signifying a recovery, a brighter day etc. etc. obviously. I don't really have a point lmao, this is all just obvious. Argh, blah.

Yeah that song wouldn't fit in the slightest.

It makes me think of dark blue. Probably due to the spacious production.

But that's also why it wouldn't fit... whilst a lot of The Eminem Show captures a rap-rock sound, or rock-infused rap sound... that track is a bit too 'gooey', it's sounds a bit floaty and abstract where as the rest of TES is grounded, realistic and... layered.

Just doesn't sound the same sonically.

Yes that's a good, weird subtle little point.

As when I think of it now, I don't think of the rest of the album. Which just highlights how it was forced at request rather than organic like the rest.

But, it still seems to fit on the album. As does "Deja Vu" on Relapse, despite it not being about chopping up babies and Em breaking out character.

Which just shows to me that production and style are thee most important elements when making an album click. Which is why Recovery seems disjointed and a bit random, as too many cooks spoil the broth. "Deja Vu" fits despite its content, due to style and production.

Consistent sonics and vocals are the key. Recovery is a good album with some incredible tracks but he seriously tarnished the final effect, the overall result, with all those producers. If just he and Mr. Porter had produced, man... that could of been special.

Me either.

I think of Purple--meaning The Slim Shady LP

I don't know if it's the sound, or just the name of the track that makes me associate it with SSLP, but I always have.

For me it has to be "The Marshall Mathers LP" (I actually worship this album # Stan ,Yeah .)

There have been MCs who have used novelty art at the best level for their Album cover. From what i have observed this has changed when "The Marshall Mathers LP" came out,it also had some fascinating alternative covers,
Image
Image

The cover art was a striking departure from the hip-hop norm ,something really unusual, while most rap covers were about showing off money and bragging about power, "The Marshall Mathers LP" shows Eminem[Marshall Mathers] in a sepia-toned photograph, huddled and chained up against a fence. The somber mood of the image perfectly sets off the inner struggles of the album.

Not only that it also presented a fascinating portrayal of a man who has made some bad choices coming to terms with his responsibility as an adult.

Respect .
