Favourite books?

Postby TRshady » Oct 17th, '11, 21:14

Up to the age of 18, the only books I had read were those covering the escapades of Biff and Chip. In the past few years I've widened my scope a little and can't get enough of them written wonders. What books have you read recently that have had some, any kind of impact on you? Mine are:

- One Day by David Nicholls. Along with the middle aged women of the UK, I loved this story, nothing else has covered the reality of life and relationships like this book. It's one of few times I've finished a book and felt nothing but loss at the end of a journey. Hilarious and moving.

- The 7 habits of highly effective people by Steve Covey. Always been a little sceptical to 'self help' books (I can help myself mofucka!), but this book clicked. The concepts of emotional bank accounts, not being that gossip, having a goal etc are common sense when looked back on, but making a habit of these is essential to a fulfilling life.. in my opinion of course.

- Starter for Ten by David Nicholls. Nothing makes me laugh out loud, not even old women falling down stairs and yet this book had me trying to stop myself. Genuinely funny and relevant, another great book from David Nicholls.

- The Reader. Google the author (meet me halfway here!), a classic book turned into an equally special film. I couldn't put this book down, desperate to point it out to everyone I came across, during and the weeks following. The uncertainty and insecurity of relationships is portrayed so well here. Sadly the book switches focus completely in the final two-thirds but it's a page turner and real moving.

So what's got you hooked? (haven't posted for a while, was tempted to post in the welcome section  )

Honestly, I'm not into reading books. I know that it's a time worth spending but I prefer reading articles and magazines. Sure it's a version of lesser quality and more mainstream so to say, but that's what I enjoy doing more.

Same here.

Literature is the only form of art I haven't really gotten into, although I plan on at least trying to read some books in the near future. :tounge2:

Slaughterhouse-Five - Great book, weirdo combo of science fiction and world war 2

Any Stephen King book, if you like horror, you can't go wrong.

David Drake is a pretty good science fiction author. Explorers In Hell is about a few historical figures escaping from Hell

Some great books recommend here, given me some ideas.
I'm not one to read books I don't relate too in some way, so sci-fi and action books don't hold much appeal.. even if they are simply a backdrop for the characters. As for reading in general, 90% are educational books, but I'm branching out slowly but surely.

Just imagine them like super extended movies, that might help you get more into the sci fi.

Books you can relste are the best, the same with music and film. Yet sometimes we all crave a little escapism and its nice to run away into a fantasy world, or one full of things in the dark.

Find a movie you adore and read the book version and read it. It will offer tons more details about the characters you love, and will also be a great stepping stone into entering book genres your not sure about.

The hardest part is actually opening the book and started it. Once your past that, your be fucking hook

The Law Of Dreams - Peter Behrens
Beautiful story about a young man trying to escape Ireland during the great famine.

Less Than Zero/Imperial Bedrooms - Brett Easton Ellis
Raw and minimalistic writing, story about superficial teenagers who do nothing but drugs, sex and violent acts.

House Of Leaves - Mark Z. Danielewski
You really have to hold this book in your hands to see how great it is.
The format and structure of the novel is unconventional, with unusual page layout and style, making it ergodic literature. It contains copious footnotes, many of which contain footnotes themselves, and some of which reference books that do not exist.[1] Some pages contain only a few words or lines of text, arranged in strange ways to mirror the events in the story, often creating both an agoraphobic and a claustrophobic effect. The novel is also distinctive for its multiple narrators, who interact with each other throughout the story in disorienting and elaborate ways.

This book is really something else, incredibly clever the way it's all put together. Major mindfuck, and I found it quite scary at times. Reading this book in the winter while listening to Godspeed You! Black Emperor's 'Slow Riot For New Zerø Kanada EP' has been an amazing experience. I really recommend everyone to read this book and become absorbed by it.

George Orwell - 1984
Great novel for everyone, especially those interested in political science. Dystopian novel that can teach you a lot about modern society, while maintaining an interesting and great story.

I'm currently reading a lot of literary classics from writers like Nabokov and Dostoevsky, both amazing writers. The way Nabokov plays with words in Lolita is phenomenal.

The Stranger by Albert Camus is the only book I have ever read for class and enjoyed. In fact, it is the only book to ever leave me in awe; The protagonist's character is brilliantly portrayed and explored.
