Complex: 25 Songs Where Rappers Got Murked On Their Own Shit

Complex - "Ever since Nas hurled those immortal words—'Eminem murdered you on your own shit'—at Jay-Z, weve been thinking about all the songs where rappers stepped in and straight bodied their hosts. That's why we're taking a trip to the land of damaged egos and career-making cameos with 25 Songs Where Rappers Got Murdered on Their Own Sh*t..."

#2 - Renegade - Jay-Z ft. Eminem (Murderer) - The Blueprint - 2001

On 'Ether’—one of the most vicious diss songs of all time—Nas took plenty shots at Jay-Z's sexuality and street credibility, but the line that burned extra slow was, 'Eminem murdered you on your own shit.' So props to Nas for coining the term that inspired this list. And by the way, there's no denying that Nas was right.

Most of Jay-Z's album The Blueprint was built on soul but for some reason he opted to rhyme over one of Eminem's trademark haunted house tracks alongside Marshall himself. Maybe Jigga wanted to prove that he was the Best Rapper Alive by rocking with The Next Best Rapper In Line? Eitherway, Jay held his own but Marshall spazzed spitting one ofthe best verses of his career and owned Hov on Hov's best album.

That's not the only song where the other collaborator got murked by Eminem. But the real question is: Is Renegade Eminem's best song of all time?

In reality, it's Em's shit.

Well to be technical, 'Bad Meets Evil's shit'.

But, Em produced it and wrote the hook and had it made with Royce before he even gave it to Jay. So just because it's on Jay's album doesn't make it 'his shit'.

This song also just goes to show just how much better Eminem is than Jay-Z. Not that it wasn't already glaringly obvious to anybody with taste and intelligence.

94% of people of who say Eminem murdered Jay-Z on Renegade are saying it because Nas said it.

Em edged the song, nothing more. Two of Jay-Z's best ever verses.

I don't understand how could people say Jay-Z got murked.
I mean, Eminem had better verses and that was a hard thing to do knowing Jay heard them before, but it's not like Hova's verses were wack at all.

You'd think Jay would've picked it up a little bit, knowing it'd technically become "his shit". Not to mention Em's verses and hook were already laid down on the track when Jay got it.

If I was Jay I'd be like, "damn I need to equal this"

So it's his own fault he got murdered.

I think he tried his level best and managed to keep up.

No, it could just be because he actually did kill him. Jay's verses were good, but Em totally murked him, without a doubt.

He more than edged it.

Em's verses were already layed and Jay heard them and was in what many consider to be his prime or certainly one of his peaks, as The Blueprint is considered one of his best albums.

And he still couldn't even out-write Em, sat down, having Em's verses there, in his prime.

Em's verses were better in every way. The subject-matter was more broad and yet also more astute, his delivery was 100 times more exciting and... theatrical, his flow was better, and more melodic. And the lyricism, the attention to detail. Em > Jay all the way.

Jay had good verses but Em's easily topple and overpower his.

Eminem's other cold-cases (from the Complex article):

Xzibit ft. Eminem - Don't Approach Me
Dr. Dre ft. Eminem - Forgot About Dre
50 Cent ft. Eminem - Patiently Waiting
Game ft. Eminem - We Ain't

Surprised to see Drop The World / Forever (serial killing) ain't on this list...

There's a difference between murked and two 9/10 Jay verses and two 10/10 Eminem verses

Seriously, Em in no way murdered Hov. The debate should be about who has the better verse, and although Em probably just wins, there's no murder in sight. Em's words are what they are, and they are hard hitting, but Hov's metaphors and wordplay is immaculate and feels so profound. Em gets the nod because his flow is close to perfect.

Nas doesn't think Em murdered Hov too. No way. That was just a retaliation to Hov's line about Nas' bodyguard having a better verse than him. That made a lot of people laugh and Nas had to retaliate in a similar fashion. In fact, the only two things that Takeover has over Ether is the beat, and that line.

As for the overall list, predictable and easy choice for #1, but more Hov pocket grabbing from Complex, listing 'Black Republicans' as a song where he murdered Nas. Since when? I've not heard one person with that view. If there has ever been any murder in relation to those two artists, it's Nas' murdering Hov on Success with the metaphorical subliminal disses at Hov on his own song. But that's not murder either, he just had the better verse. Complex never ceases to amaze.

Both Artists were at their Primes when this song was made, so it was about giving the Fans the best of this Epic collab. See, that was the original intention when Jay got that song, he came to know about how good Eminem's Verse was and he tried his best to keep the same level and he managed to do that on a larger extent. You can't expect him to emulate Em's Verse, he had to make it different and he did.

The song was not made to show "Who was better?", it was about putting out the best material, given the opportunity to do so. The song a treat to the ears and was not made with an intention to compete. Nas words just made it look competitive.
