Joell Ortiz on Em

Postby Amaranthine » Dec 22nd, '11, 01:51

You can watch the whole interview here, but I transcribed the Em part below:
"We all respect Eminem so much on the mic, man. It's like a kid that grew up playing basketball being able to hang with Jordan. You know what I'm saying? That's how we feel, like 'Good Lord!'. When we're recording and he listens, and he peeks in and you get just a little pointer or two, we're all just like 'yeah, yeah, yeah!'. You know what's so funny, man? How humble Mr. Marshall Mathers is. He be the guy like, 'Joell, I was listening to the verse, I love it - if the end - if you could just come out of your verse a little stronger, I think it'll have an impact' and then wait on my response like it matters to him. You know what I'm saying? Like, you know, artists [unintelligible] with their paintings, but he really, really cares. He really, really cares how you feel and if I would tell him like, you know, 'Em, when I was coming out of it, I really wanted to come out of it that way for this reason' he'll be like 'Oh, okay, cool! I didn't know that was what you were trying to do, I was just - you know - " He's the most humble guy, humble superstar I've ever been around."

Em has developed into a much classier guy.

Not that he didn't always have pure artistic integrity etc. but now, there's a sort of mellow legend about him, just a gentlemen, thoughtful... smart (his style too), it's a good image now.

I bet in the past when Em was in Joell's shoes, Em would have a much more different, angrier reaction to someone criticizing and asking him to change his verse, or a line.

But still, cool read.

Doubt it. I remember tons of old Em interviews, like 99-01 where he said Dre or Jimmy asked him to change this or change that, and he did it most of the time because he respected them and could see their point.

But I think that's only correct when he's interacting with rappers, he respects the genre so much that he'll be down to support any good rappers. He could have easily said no to B.o.B but he didn't because he knew he'll be something big sooner or later and he never hesitates to critique a rapper's work and that's just a good side of him that shows that he really cares so much about the genre.

In general, I think Em just got bored with being angry all the time and that he's off drugs now he's got much more things to do in his life.

ya think?

My Dad usually heard the new Em songs back in the day before I did.

Off of Napster, back when it was the place to go for illegal music downloads.

My dad also bought Devil's Night for himself before he gave it to me. Ah, those were the days...

Why? That would just mean he would be the biggest artist on the planet, all generations included. If he keeps the same lyrics, same style as Recovery I don't quite see why it would be that bad. :y:

That article is cool though. I like it, it almost seems like Em is scared of telling them he doesn't like this or that. I'd like to know if they ever saw Eminem being angry or something, I would ask Royce on twitter lmao.

By the way, Eminem liked B.o.B because he's a complete artist. Not only he raps, but he sings, he produces and shit. And I guess it kinda reminded him of his old self.

I can't believe you haven't figured Eminem as a character in popular culture since the late 1990s.
Eminem, the name and his persona stood up for all the things percieved as wrong by the general public. A motherfucking rebel to the highest extremes. Hell nah I don't want him to change that much.
But he will, nonetheless.
We need more dudes like Tyler the fucking Creator. lol
