Tech N9ne Complaint (opinion)

Postby NoColor » Mar 19th, '12, 05:24

Why is Tech N9ne held in SUCH high regards by the members here?

I mean I LIKE the rapper and he has a nice flow but I don't hold his lyrics in such a high regard as you guys do.

Some fans might be fascinated by his constant multi-syllabic rhymes but it gets old.

And too many times it does not even make any sense.

It just sounds forced (not pronunciation wise like Em back in Relapse but forced as in to just use 'em) and I think the four in Slaughterhouse handle multi-syllabic rhymes better in those terms.

To cite some examples:

Ugly Duckling:
"I look lovely with cash instead of muggy and clash" - Muggy and clash??
"But then it tainted space Better to bring it straight then gain it late and aim it fake"

Worldwide Choppers:
"You wit’ it, you dig it, you never lost the apostle
And I be the only chopper that’s tossed in the brothel
You said it’s pathetic, my head is off in the taco" - Hardly graspable meanings in the first 2 bars and "my head is off in the taco"? WTF?

And in some songs he makes ridiculous multi-syllabic rhymes and puts it off with lame humor:

"I don't know what I mean when I say elbow macaroni bitch"

"Better pay attention cuz if ya simpin' ya get froze
And I'mma leave you with a wet nose, when im rippin they catch colds"

Then he goes off to wonder if that line made sense.
No. It does not.

Why does he do this?

Why do you guys like him so much?

They're fun but they don't sound deep to me and I think anyone can paste up multi-syllabic rhymes up together and call it a verse. And if so, how is this any different from how you guys complained about how easy it is to make a Nicki verse?

Once again, I like Tech and I'm not disrespecting his ability.
Just wondering why you guys go out of your length to LOVE on a guy with such a habit.

im pretty sure we can find lyrics of some bad eminem songs and question why millions of people like him to.. :facepalm
Eminem - Infinite

Ayo, my pen and paper cause a chain reaction
To get your brain relaxing, a zany acting maniac in action
A brainiac in fact son, you mainly lack attraction
You look insanely whack when just a fraction of my tracks spun
My rhyming skills got you climbing hills
I travel through your mind into you spine like siren drills
I'm sliming grills of roaches, with sprayed on disinfectants
Twist the necks of rappers 'til their spinal column disconnects

Firstly, it's not just because millions of people like him. Millions like Nikki, Wayne etc. It's that people on this site regard him as arguably the best (at the moment/ever)

I would find you hard pressed to take apart any aspects of prime Em. Maybe the odd bad line but that's not the point. :facepalm

What the OP is referring to is more than an odd bad line Tech may spit. The trade off Tech makes for his unbelievable flow and rhyming is that a lot of his verses are empty, redundant or just plain don't make any sense.

Rhyming for the sake of rhyming from the best lyricist? you'd hope not

OMG THANK YOU. :worship:

Tech N9ne is a dope lyricist, no doubt.

But I'VE NOTICED THERE ARE TIMES WHEN SOME LINES MAKE ZERO SENSE, it's like he's rhyming just for the sake of rhyming. I thought I was the only one who had noticed that.

And to make it worse, I have a friend who listens to TECH AND ONLY TECH, and nobody else, and won't stop worshiping him, and Tech's gotten really annoying to me because of that.

There's something that just leads me away from him, and I don't know what it is... him not making sense sometimes is part of the reason.
"This dude doing this interview wants me to spin a few,
Lyrics while I tie my tennis shoes in the nude
A romantic interlude in a livin’ room,
In an inner tube with a dude with a bit of lube
Fuck that I’m sniffin’ glue, sippin' gin & juice,
And a little bit of paint thinner with my dinner too,
You better pay me for my bars like your rent is due,
Now hurry up and finish dude before I finish you."

I haven't liked a Tech album since EverReady.

For the most part Tech has great lyrics but I do agree that sometimes he raps about absolutely nothing for the sake of rhyming. He makes up for it often with his energy and flow though. Not many people can touch Tech in those aspects.

Well that puts alot of pressure on me to answer that doesnt it lol. On behalf of all Technicians everywhere let me try defend it a bit.

First, Tech N9ne releases more music than any person post mixtape lil Wayne circa '08 therefore it is obvious there will be a lot of recycled concepts like every rapper does. Because of this, some of them could sound tired. BUT, for a person who releases so much music, i find that he covers so many different angles about the parties/success and trials he goes through and they are constantly engaging. On the whole. That said, alot of the lines are not defensible. His most successful single to date even has this great soundbite
tech, huh, you not making any sense

So, why would we fuck with it? Coz its not english, its fucking art. If he goes Crazy in "Am i A Physco" we vibe to that craziness. Fans are mobilised by "Technicians" "Awkward" evokes the type of reaction he really wants you to feel of WTF?!. "Delusional" makes u feel his pain. "F.A.N.S" convey the gratefulness he feels to his fans. Simply, the purpose of his music is conveyed to his fans through the great sounding addictive nature of his creative output.

Let us say that rappers want to describe this :-

Image

Most rappers (Jeezy for example) would through their words paint this picture

Image understandable and relatively accurate but quite boring.

Good rappers, people with a "message" like Lupe would probably go a bit better and paint this picture

Image its vivid, its true and it has alot of "educational" commentary attached to it.

But with us Technicians its more like this

Image its a klusterfuk of vividness and creativity and intricate lines yet there is an "elusive obvious" message that u will be able to take from it. And IMHO, its the most creative and artistically superior.

That's kind of how I feel about Aesop Rock.

His music is like an abstract, almost.

@momentsgolden

You know those modern arts right?
You know, the ones with just a dot or just like a splash of paint.

Now when Matisse or Picasso does this it's fucking phenomenal.
It's not even because they're famous. It's because they know what they're doing.
They're not doing it for the sake of making an abstract piece of art.

But when an amateur artist decide that he wants to draw something like that too,
gets A canvas and just paints it black, and calls it "Looking into the eyes of Death"
It's fucking pathetic.

Its not phenomenal or artistic because the artist knows not what he is doing
or grasps the idea behind his work, if there is any.

When you say tech is like the artist that drew that painting are you claiming that he understands lyricism beyond other rappers and listeners (other then "Technicians") apparently can fathom?

And that we think his rhyming is overboard and meaningless because we cannot grasp it?

Or is he making it abstract for the sake of it like that amateur artist?
Which goes back to my original point.

I make a post that's more than 2 paragraph's long maybe once a year. So this may be worth reading :sweating: I've included links to back up things that I feel need backing-up.

Okay, before I say anything, I need to make it perfectly clear that I will be speaking from a non-bias point of view. I've never considered myself a "Technician", only someone who deeply appreciates Tech's take on lyricism and more specifically the art of rhyme. But for the sake of argument, I will be speaking as someone who has no specific interest in any artist more than any other.

The first thing you need to understand, is that Tech is almost never just rhyming for the sake of rhyming. And when he is, it's pretty easy to notice, since he doesn't try to hide it. He is very precisely aware of every single syllable in every single bar.

(PS: The 2 links above are supposed to direct you to 21:40 & 40:17. But if you're using Google Chrome it may bug out and send you to the same time twice.)

What I've noticed separates major Tech fans from the ones who simply don't get it, is the ability to mentally split the sentences in his bars. Because Tech loves to end a sentence mid-bar and start a new one with the 2nd half of it, without ever stopping to indicate that the sentence ended there.

The reason for this is for the sake of flow. And Tech's crazy lyrical pieces start to become a lot more clear when you understand that often, flow is his #1 priority. And in this sense you'll see that he's actually using the words as instrument notes. The syllables fall perfectly into place like Tetris, and while the bars he's spitting sometimes don't correctly follow our language's rules of grammar, because of it you're able to rock to that shit like no other. And you still know what he's describing because of his word choice. There's a writer/author by the name of Cormac McCarthy who likes to do the same thing in his writing. However Tech is the only artist that I'm aware of who does it to this degree with lyrics.

Once you're able to grasp what I said in the above paragraph, his super hardcore lyrical shit gains a whole new layer of talent (I'm using 'talent' due to lack of a better word, but you get what I mean).

Now, NoColor, under that pretense, I'm going to explain the lines you don't understand by putting them in sentence form, with proper punctuation. This should make it easier for you to not only understand what he's saying, but to be able to have the right state of mind when listening to Tech from here on. Which I think will help a lot of people if they just give it a chance.

Ugly Duckling - "Now your chick wanna hug me and smash and look lovely in cash instead of muggy. And clash? you'd act like we was buddies in class."
See how it's suddenly clear what he's saying? Let's move along.
-
"Got my painted face. Aint it great? Really illuminated, made it within a tainted space. Better to bring it straight and gain it late then aim at fake; famous for my brain, it's fate."
Tech has been around so long that he's done music with Tupac. On top of that, the dude does 2 albums and 200 shows a year for the last 11 years. And that's before we even get to the mixtapes and features. Yet Tech is still fairly unknown. But he's happy with his music regardless, and that he has kept it so real for so long. That's what he's referring to here.

Worldwide Choppers - "You with it, you get it, you never lost the apostle. He's sick, he can give it the Poe and toss in Picasso. Killin everybody off is the motto, and I be the only chopper that's tossed in the brothel. You said it's pathetic? My head is off in a taco. I sped and you bled, and you in the coffin when I go."
It's funny that you used this quote. Because he's saying that if you'll get it if you're with it right there haha. Anyway, the apostle being him. And he's talking to his fans. Stating that he's never gone anywhere.

Next line he's saying that he possesses artistic talent to the point that he's able to throw things as advanced as Poe and Picasso's work into his lyricism with ease. Next line, as we all know, Tech likes to be extremely sexual at times with his work, so bare that in mind when he says "my head is off in a taco"

Technicians - "and don't know what I mean when I say elbow macaroni bitch"
He's referring to this skit from 2008's Killer.

Who Do I Catch - "Better pay attention, cause if ya simpin ya get froze, and I'mma leave you with a wet nose when im rippin. They catch colds"
Okay, the fact that you don't understand this is what makes it so great. He says "better pay attention" because he wants you to fucking pay attention. Which apparently you still do not do. Because right after he goes into explaining it, he says "they be like ah.. ah.. CHA". Followed by him laughing at it. The "CHA" there, is the exact same "CHA" that he puts over most of his breaths when he finishes laying down a verse. He does this to make the his breath control seem seamless when performing the material live. But it also happens to be the same noise you make when you sneeze.

When Tech's rippin, that "CHA" is all over his verses. And it has been for like 20 years. Get it now?

You're used to people like Em making punchlines and that are very easy to spot (for the most part). And the ones that aren't so easy to spot, like on Recovery, he goes out of his way to point them out. Which is not uncommon in hiphop. Tech's punchlines however are unbelievably well-placed and worded. So much so that the majority of them go right over your head. And he gives no fucks about explaining it to the "simps" ;)

Hope this helped
