I don't find Illmatic to be a classic. Anyway, we shouldn't be throwing the word "classic" around so easily. Let's wait another 20 years and see if these albums are considered "classic" then.

And NEARLY a fourth in Relapse (two songs totally fucked it for me).

Recovery also has classic 'potential' in that there are no truly weak songs and everything fits, but the inconsistent and clashy production makes it feel too loud and irregular in memory.

You weren't supposed to take this thread seriously.

Yeah I know.

But the April fools / joke shit is so boring, I'd rather spark a discussion.

SSLP, MMLP, TES are his three undeniable classics and I believe them to all be in the top five classic albums in the history of rap. My album list would be:

1.) The Eminem Show - Eminem
2.) The Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem
3.) Illmatic - Nas
4.) Chronic 2001 - Dr. Dre
5.) The Slim Shady LP - Eminem

Honorable mentions: Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, & All Eyez On Me (There are other classics but these are the ones I feel that could replace some of these classics that I put in my top five.

Relapse could be classic if it found a better balance between accents and normal voice, and Recovery could be classic if it weren't for the beats.

I agree. The beats sucks too much on that album.
I wanted an album so rugged nobody could touch it.
Spent a million a track and went over my budget.
Now how in the fuck am I supposed to get out of debt?
I can't rap anymore, I just murdered the alphabet.

i'd say thats a good assessment of his albums and their rank. tho its tough cause relapse/recovery could be switched or both be put as near classic albums, only because relapse lyrically is beyond a masterpiece and recovery has everything. encore would def stay as decent tho

That's why I don't like Talking 2 Myself that much...it feels like he made it to make the fans happy and that sorta pissed me off. And the Wayne line...just makes me cringe when I hear it. Nothing on Recovery screams "I'm sorry, fans!" louder than T2M. It's an alright song but I feel like a few lines do ruin it.

I'm more pissed about feeling like he had to cater to them, I guess would be a better way to put it. Saying sorry isn't as bad as I made it out to be lol.

Miller1121 wrote:I agree with the topic title. Recovery doesnt have ANY bad songs and it has a bunch of stand-out tracks. Worst parts of Recovery are the features and production. Eminem himself helped prove why he's GOAT with his work on Recovery. Hardest album for me to justify is Relapse, but Eminem did EXACTLY what he wanted to do with Relapse. Prove that he could RAP better than anybody. He did this while making an album with the tone of a horror movie and he succeeded at that as well. Relapse feels like one big production instead of just an album with 20 separate tracks.

Embase you cant let Beautiful ruin Relapse for you as much as it does. Obviously it doesnt completely fit the theme, but I think it was a great way of letting you know his mindset at the time the song was written and Relapse was the only thing that the song could have been on. He wouldnt just release that one song for the lulz and it definitely wouldnt work on Recovery.

I agree with this. I understand, you guys could have an issue with Beautiful being on Relapse, but c'mon :facepalm

WO-mothafucking-RD!!
I have been telling that since the album came out. After the first shock, when I accepted the accents, when my friends were asking me what the fuck is going on with Eminem, I told them to listen carefully, that Relapse is just incredible rhyming. :y:

He probably was just upset after recording the song...it's obvious now that he doesn't think Relapse is a piece of shit though. People say things when they're mad or upset and often take them back later. This might be the case.

As I've said a million times, the CONTENT of "Beautiful" is not what I have an issue with.

Otherwise, don't you think "Deja Vu" would bug me too?

It's the style, not the theme. It was not made for Relapse, it was made for a different album - it has an entirely different production style, and rap style, it's so obvious it's for a different project. It sounds so out of place it's ridiculous.

It'd be like having "When I'm Gone" on The Slim Shady LP.

Doesn't matter what the content is. But it does matter how it sounds, and what the style is.

It ruins an otherwise perfect continuity of tracks for me. Typically speaking, it wouldn't matter as much, but it's SO apparent to my ears / memory on Relapse due to the fact that the Relapse style (writing, flow and tone) is so unique. He's a different rapper / artist on "Beautiful".

You either have to have a complete balance, or all out X. Relapse was an 'all out' album, up until that track. He totally indulged in this weird, abstract, bouncy style, with banging, twangy, spastic Dre beats... and then a rock-sampled emotional ballad with 05/06ish rapping style pops on :confusion:

Really ruins it for me. Like if I was watching a very unique movie with a very specific directorial style, say a horror movie with sharp, cut scenes and tricky camera work and then a random, slow, emotional scene pops up right in among the action. It fucks up the flow and is out of place.

And PS. of course song would work on Recovery. Recovery was modelled after that song, it's so obvious. "Beautiful" was the best received track, publicly from Relapse. Then low and behold, he makes an album of emotional, introspective content and rock-tinged / sample-heavy tracks.

It could easily be earlyish on Recovery (aka, he 'recovers' as the album goes / concept) and that song is before / in the midst of his Recovery / him trying to rise up out of the depression.

@ EminemBase Rock Bottom and If I Had were on the Slim Shady LP 2 Emotional, Introspective, Personal tracks in a Slim Shady Persona themed Album which was heavily tracks with humor
so you are wrong in that regard that Rock BOttom and If I Had were tracks like When I'm Gone basically Eminem type tracks on a Slim Shady themed Album

Without Me and My Dads Gone Crazy are 2 Slim Shady Persona tracks on The Eminem Show an Album otherwise with Emotional, Introspective, Personal tracks

The Way I Am, Marshall Mathers, Stan were again Emotional, Introspective Eminem type tracks on an Album heavily based on violent themes, shock, and cartoonish charisma

I'm not taking a digg at you EminemBase cos you seem like a good dude you seem honest and knowledgable but you are dead wrong IMO to think Eminem wasn't always going to make an Emotional Album after Relapse cos the major point is there is The Slim Shady Persona type of Music then there is Eminem/Marshall Mathers that is the real Eminem heavily an Emotional sound Musically
