Recovery was great too though.

It was, and its content had a pretty wide variety too, but against The Eminem Show...they don't compare in quality to me. I DO, however, see a lot of similarities between how the album was structured and what type of songs were featured.

Recovery is very fucking solid. I sometimes think it was underwhelming or not as great as I thought but then I listen to it straight through... and, it's fucking good. And it's even more consistent than I ever remember it - in my mind, it always seems unstructured / random, but whenever I listen start to finish... it all flows perfectly, all the songs sound right.
But, the production is what lets it down I think. I think if Eminem had produced that album, all of it, as he did with The Eminem show, and crafted more hooks, it would be a classic. Oh my god, just imagine how much better Recovery could be with Em's own beats / melodies backing those raps, and some more of his own hooks... I'm glad I heard Em over beats by other producers, but annoyed that it was with such quality material (which sounds odd to say), on a potential classic.

Oh, I agree. I love Recovery lol. But when I pit it up against TES, it obviously isn't as good. I try not to pit his newer stuff against his older stuff though, both eras were from different points of the man's life. He's different now, not that that's really a bad thing.
When I first listened to Recovery, I didn't really find it random or unstructured like other people...the album actually flows quite well like you stated. His song choice was very spot on (though adding Fly Away and Cocaine would have greatly helped the album, I believe). He touched on a few deep subjects without overdoing it and made songs that featured his skills. It's very solid like you said. Please don't take my post like I was saying it wasn't or anything.

You all said it perfectly.
