I don't feel it's any different than, say...someone writing in their journal that they want to kill their wife who cheated on them, was a bitch, etc, etc. Obviously this is a much more public platform, but since Em uses his music as a personal journal, I don't see a problem with it.Totally agree. I used "Kim" as an inspiration for my final music project in school. You can't get much more passionate than vividly describing the mutilation of the person who wronged you that you had such intense feelings for. It's fucking beautiful.
Yes! Thank you. It's a creative fucking outlet, and yes there IS an enormous gulf between writing and recording a song about killing your lover, and actually being physically aggressive towards them (or even just mentally abusive), in person.
And I don't buy that Kim was all that offended by those songs. I mean, I don't think she's made of stone, and she probably was hurt, but not so hurt that she's still holding a grudge. I mean, there comes a time, where the punishment no longer fits the crime. Plus, I think she's been through way too much actual hurt and abuse to give a shit about a couple of songs by a guy whose career she doesn't even take seriously. She probably just rolled her eyes, and was somewhat irritated, but I would imagine she kind of just carried on with her life pretty soon after, and just enjoyed her riches, and dealt with her real problems (some of which, I'm sure, did involve Em).
Obviously there is a major difference between making a song about it and actually doing it. That goes without saying. That does not mean that what is in the song is a good picture of morality because it clearly is just the opposite.
And you want to talk about being mentally abusive to someone what exactly do you think this song would do when kim heard it and knew everyone else was hearing it too. Theres not really much worse way you can mentally abuse a person. And his daughter Haillie? Her hearing her father talk (if you could even call it that) that way about her own mother. I cant even imagine. I know he did it for the sake of the music, but now that hes older and more mature im sure he regrets ever releasing a song like this.
Eminem was far from a morally pretty artist. He wasnt trying to be. He was just trying to be real about what he felt and thats one of the things that makes him so great. The truth is its kind of a morally fucked up world so if artists are gonna be real youll get morally fucked up songs. This song is a perfect example of that. In it he shows us a side of him most people wouldnt dare and executes it (no pun intended) perfectly. The amazing creativity and passion it has is completely separate from the morality shown in the song because in that sense it is wrong, but that doesnt take away from its genius.
