The thinhs is, I grew up in a normal middle class family and can't relate to most of Eminem's music at all but still got into him by middle school.

As another poster (and also the OP) said, the current teenagers, and their music and their culture in general are a lot different to, say, 2004.

Those of you who don't have a clue what songs are popular with teenagers at the moment, check out these songs which are currently in the top 10:

Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe
One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful
The Wanted - Glad You Came
Nicki Minaj - Starships
Justin Bieber - Boyfriend

Those are the most popular songs at the moment. Seriously. Remember when Eminem said "Nobody listens to technoooooo"? Well, we're back to the techno. Back to those boy groups (and Justin Bieber) singing cheesy love songs. Call Me Maybe is WORSE than anything Britney Spears ever did. Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears got #1s last year. Eminem and 50 Cent did not.

Experiencing it myself now, I know exactly why Eminem was so angry with the state of popular music during the 1996-2002 period. It's very frustrating, not to mention I find it completely weird that 15 year-olds are requesting these songs on their radio stations, watching those videos on Youtube.

And it's been well over a year since a hip hop song was #1. Yet I remember when I was a teenager, there was a week where 50 Cent had 4 songs in the top 10!! Things have changed A LOT. It's not the same at all.

If Lose Yourself and In Da Club were released now, they wouldn't become classics. Nobody would buy those songs, radio wouldn't play them, they'd have no cultural impact, they'd just get completely ignored now. People just want to buy all those dance-pop songs now.

Sounds like it was written by my 3rd grader cousin who shows absolutely no creative aptitude whatsoever (he's more of a science/math kid).

This music makes me ashamed to be a teenager of this generation.

The song is so uncreative aswell. The instrumental to it is a complete rip-off of Stereo Love (a eurodance song from 2009 produced by Edward Maya, which also ripped-off another song).

Glad You Came was a hit in my country in summer 2011. I'm quite dismayed to see it's become big in the US too tbh.

"Turn the light off now
Now I'll take you by the hand
Hand you another drink
Drink it if you can
Can you spend a little time
Time is slipping away
Away from us so stay
Stay with me I can make
Make you glad you came"

If you can't notice the technique used there.. then.. :facepalm

I fail to see the "rebellious teen" aspect of SSLP.

Rock Bottom and If I Had are about a young adult who is broke and frustrated over his disappointing status. What teen relates to that?

97 Bonnie and Clyde is a dark tale of driving to the ocean to dump the body of his wife and her new husband and step-son into the ocean. For teenagers? Rebellion?

Not seeing it. At all. That's his most mature album, bar none.

The Eminem Show had much more "teen rebellion" in it.

It's utterly baffling how ass-backwards people describe Eminem's music sometimes.

There is definitely a "rebellious teen" aspect in SSLP.

The 'just don't give a fuck' mentality being a theme that a lot of rebellious teens would respond to.

OH MY GOD IT MADE IT!

Damn this song is song of the year, no doubt.

Dude, if you don't like the song just say you don't like it, you don't have to bash it.

Well no fucking shit it's for teens did it take you this long to figure out? Doesn't make it any bad by any stretch or any less music than songs aimed at the adult demographic, saying it's otherwise is stupid. It's like me saying Gooesbumps books are aimed at the late teens demographic when it's so not the case, doesn't stop me from liking the books as much as I did when I was younger.
