Live in the US, 25% Italian, 25% Korean, and the other half is Irish, Canadian, German, English, and probably a bunch of others that I don't know about.

I'm a white American. My mom's side came from England or Wales, and my dad's side is Irish-Scot (so I've heard). I remember my mom saying that my grandfather was part Indian, but I don't know if she meant Native American or actual India.

Why do Americans always say that they're Irish, Italian etc. when only their great, great, great, great grandfather was?

Personally, I think it's less absurd than black Americans saying they're African American when their family's probably been out of Africa for generations.
