Did dr dre ruin Eminem?

Postby slimfan94 » May 20th, '12, 00:10

Everyone always talks about how dre saved em, and they're right to a certain extent but in the same way did he ruin him? Technically speaking infinite was eminems best album. It was nas like. When Eminem signed with dre he sold out in a way. Not because he used to slim shady persona, as he didn't sell out on the ssep but his songs were more gimmicky on the sslp. Also if em never signed with dre you could say he never would have had the drug problems he did since he would have never been around the culture. So did dre ruin em?

Copying Nas was Eminem's best work?

LOL.

There we go...

The SSEP was definitely rawer than the SSLP. I'm sure that the major label presence has everything to do with that, and you only have to look as far as the censorship on "My Name Is" to see that he was compromising his art to some--albeit, very limited--extent soon after he was signed.

People weren't really fucking with him though. Who's to say he wouldn't have quit rap or killed himself after the SSEP had Dre not come along?

So a silver medal at the rap olympics, a good independant album (Infinite) and a working group of "super emcees" D12 is not enough to show people liked him? Back then, gaining a buzz was next to impossible without a record label so i'd say he was actually doing really well.

Infinite flopped bigtime. They had big expectations for it, they tailor-made it for radio and nobody bought it, nobody played it on the radio.

The medal wasn't bad, but it was a striking blow to his ego, or so it seemed to have been from what we know. Infinite sold next to nothing, and didn't get him very far at all. The Slim Shady EP would be a better example, as it was actually garnering press attention (The Source) and they were selling it on consignment wherever they could.

It isn't about whether or not people liked him. Perhaps I wasn't clear...when I meant people weren't fucking with him, I meant people in the industry. Without Dre taking the step he did, I'm not sure anyone would have.

There were some promising signs, I suppose. You've got the Rawkus Records stuff, but he would have been fucked with them. You have Tommy Boy signing him and Royce on a group deal, but I want to say that was after Dre, but before the SSLP. Wendy Day had his back...these are promising signs, but I'm not sure anyone would have taken a risk on him in the industry.

He would have been stuck in indie limbo with backpackers and battle rappers. Those are his roots, there's nothing wrong with that, but I'm not sure he would have been able to fair as well in that capacity as some of the other artists did.

He ruined him on Relapse with an overload of his beats. :shifty:

I think he was talking about the reception of Infinite when it was released, not after he blew up.

You're right about the Rap Olympics not being what the battle leagues are now. I think then, it was more of an "off-the-dome" type of thing. That's why Eminem would point out when someone would spit something that sounded pre-written. Of course, we all know that Eminem would use things that were written from time to time as well.

Fack is Em's best song, now this. :facepalm

Actually, he said best song of all time. I don't even think he was limiting it to Eminem, or Hip Hop.
