50 Cent Talks Em, Song Choices at SXSW

Postby Amaranthine » May 23rd, '12, 14:24

Right. I remember watching your SXSW performance and you did Get Rich, which is a classic and was great, but at the very end, you did the “Collapse Freestyle” and I was more excited to see that because I never thought you’d do that song.

50 Cent: You know what’s crazy? Em has the weirdest choices of what he wants to perform, when it comes time for us to collaborate all the time. I look at it like, we’ve got “Crack A Bottle.” We won Grammys for the record. Let’s do “Crack A Bottle,” maybe. It was a huge record.

“Collapse” is a huge record though.

DJ Drama: Shit was dope. Yeah, that was definitely the shit.

50 Cent: It’s certain points where he wants to actually say the verse. What he did performance-wise, he chooses it. I had to learn “Collapse,” right there, in front of you, at this SXSW rehearsal. I hadn’t heard that freestyle in so long, so I had to sit there and learn it.

I didn’t say my verse in its entirety. I said six bars of my verse, Em said the rap, and I said the last six bars at the end of him, because he wanted to say his verse and the edit that we had didn’t allow me to say my whole verse. So I said, “Play it again. OK. I know it. Let’s do it.” And then he wanted to do the “Love Me” joint.

Eminem called, while I was in the hospital. He was like, “Man, you got shot nine times. If you die over a cheeseburger, this shit is going to go down in history, man. You better get your ass out the hospital.” He cheered me up. He made me laugh, under circumstances that weren’t that funny.

Yeah, I couldn’t believe that you did “Collapse” and got Eminem to do it. But I really wanted you to do my favorite song, “Banks Victory.” It was like, “Damn. We couldn’t get Banks’ ‘Victory.’”

50 Cent: [Pauses.] You know what’s really interesting? No matter how much you do for an artist, I don’t think you can prevent there from being a point that the artist wants it to be about them, regardless of who it is. I think when you’re not an artist, and you’re an executive, you never have that conflict.

Source. It's a really cool interview, go read the whole thing.

If he let the industry fuck him over so badly, clearly he isn't smart.

50 Cent's downfall has been down to a lot of things.

Firstly, the media love it when an artist that was top of the world has a downfall, and they love to push those stories. Other artists like Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears have suffered from that like 50 Cent has.

Secondly, the whole Kanye West situation in 2007 made him look really bad. That chart battle really got so much coverage. Everybody knew about it, and I don't think 50 Cent expected/wanted it to get THAT big. Perhaps if he wasn't dramatic enough to say he'd quit music if Kanye won, things might've still worked out for him. Also, Ayo Technology, whilst one of his biggest hits, and a pretty good song, made him look quite desperate I think.

Thirdly, hip hop in general has been in the decline commercially anyway. Most of the hip hop (and RnB artists) are nowhere near as popular now as they were in, say, 2004. Interscope also is largely to blame. It gets massive promotional campaigns for some certain artists, but all the rappers just get cast to the side and ignored now.

However, all this said, 50 Cent's career isn't going THAT bad. Down On Me was one of the biggest urban hits of 2011. It was bigger than I Need a Doctor and Lighters. Also, Buzzin' and Right There were big hits in the UK. He only did guest verses on those songs, but they were massive hits, so millions of people heard him rapping on the radio or on their mp3 players or whatever last year, and clearly he's not THAT hated or irrelevent if songs with him on sell that much and get so much airplay.

I think 50 just did too much too soon. How about a better follow up to Get Rich instead of movies, soft drinks, clothing lines, record company, fighting with Game, Dre, his record company, random girlfriends. It's like after Get Rich he was just all over the place. I think people kind of got tired of him. But clearly he's a good at padding the bank account.

You're right, until GRODT he was very focused. I guess the fame affected his lifestyle and that impacted on the quality of his music. The same can be said for Eminem, which is ironic because it was his reaction fame and being in the spotlight that gave us MMLP.

Nah 50's alright, he's not where he was or where EM is sales wise anymore, but still there are only 5-6 rappers nowadays who sell more than him.
This lame ass Rick Ross & many more celebrate big time at 160k first week, where 50 is considered to be flopping which speaks volumes. Game had big support from Interscope but he didn't even get to 100k, Yella had EM behind him & couldn't even get to 50k...
Unfortunately I don't expect SH to move more than like 120k-150k either but it is what it is.

50's next album is gonna do way better too because even if Interscope are cheap again, Twitter is gonna do it for him. It's easy to promote whatever with that many followers, the word just flies all over the place.
