So I couldn't have songs from The Slim Shady LP with songs from say The Eminem Show and have it be a 'perfect' or even a good album. As to me that would be totally inconsistent.
Which is the reason "Beautiful" ruins Relapse for me. It doesn't ruin it because it's such a bad song, but because it clearly wasn't made for that album and sounds out of place.
Great albums have a consistent sound, just like great movies have a consistent feel that carries throughout. Imagine having a random horror scene in the middle of a romantic comedy or visa versa... it wouldn't make sense. And, that's what it feels like when you have an inconsistent album.
I don't completely agree with you here. Great movies can have aspects of multiple genres, much the same with albums.
It's not about the aspect of the genre, or the content, it's the style and the sound.
The Slim Shady LP is political, comical, satirical, personal etc.
It's not that you can't mix themes, I'm talking about style, and overall sound. All the records on
The Slim Shady LP, have a particular style. They were made for the same album.
That tracklist you made wouldn't work for me, as an album. It's just a collection of great tracks. An album needs to have a consistent and coherent sound, with all the records fitting. Otherwise it may as well be a greatest hits CD.
