But that's where you're wrong.
I do like his introspective music, some of his greatest tracks have come out of it. But there's a time and a place for it, and he's done enough material on that now, we have TONS of it, so I don't wanna hear another slew of records on it, I have enough, he's hammered his life issues to death.
It seems like he puts those tracks on his album for the sake of it now, because he knows people expect it, and to try 'balance' the album. I like "Beautiful", and I love "Deja Vu", but I believe Relapse would be a classic without them... in fact "Deja Vu" I would keep, but that's all you need there; it fits the album in style and sound and it perfect being in the place that it is; but that album wasn't about being connected with reality, it was abstract and disconnecting, and it would have been far more effective if that's ALL it was. Just like The Marshall Mathers LP is so effective because it's ALL what it is, he doesn't try to balance it, he just smashes it for what it is.
Where as since... Encore, he's been reluctant to stick to a theme and be relentless with the material, he always thinks "oh, better have x track for these fans, or y for these", which makes it not as good, because he's second-guessing his instincts, and that's how you get mixed, unfocused albums, or albums with a lack of identity (Recovery).
When he used to do it back in the day it arose naturally because he was living through those issues or they were only just in the rear view, and he did them naturally and they fit his albums and enhanced them. And even with Recovery, it was valid; he had just come back from an overdose and he had some shit to rap about, but it's not the only trick in the book, we know Em can rap articulately about his life issues and make it emotionally resonant and effective...
So I'm not excited to hear more of that. I want creativity; concepts, originality, new ideas, new presentations, I want to be blown away.
