Will Eminem ever sell a mill in the first week again?

Postby Inkredible » Nov 3rd, '12, 14:09

SSLP: 283,000 copies sold first week.
MMLP: 1,760,000 copies sold first week
TES: 1,322,000 copies sold first week
Encore 711, 000 copies sold first week
Relapse: 608,000 copies sold first week
Recovery: 753,000 copies sold first week

Was just thinking about his new album and was wondering if it was possible for it to go platinum in the first week. Not many artists are still capable of pulling these numbers, but Eminem is definately one. Obviously Recovery was a very commercial album, plus "Not Afraid" and "Love The Way You Lie" were extremely successfull singles, having over 300,000,000+ views on youtube. Yet Eminem only managed to sell 750k copies in the first week. So my question, will Eminem ever be able to pull the numbers he got from MMLP/TES in the first week? I personally think his last solo album or "retirement" album will top a mill in the first week.

Discuss.

Encore did over 1 million in it's first seven days. I think his next album will do somewhere around 1 million simply because of how big his fanbase has grown since Recovery. If the promotion is big and it's released at a good time of the year then it's certain.

A solid 800 000 is my guess. I think the first-week-milli days are over for Eminem to be honest. Can't really justify why. I'd say they are over in general, but Taylor Swift easily did 1.2mil first week with her latest album....so I don't know, it could be possible.

Her previous album opened with 1.1mil too but looking at the overall sales Em sold more than her both in the U.S and worldwide.
Em cares about longevity more than 1st week numbers.

And her second week predictions are 315-325k which is how much Recovery sold on its second week.

Well...she DID start her career in '06 and has a 4-album discography so he obviously has more numbers. It was solely a first week sales comparison I was making given the current climate of the music industry.

I don't care, as long as we don't need to see a new, desperate radio atempt like Lighters.
I wanted an album so rugged nobody could touch it.
Spent a million a track and went over my budget.
Now how in the fuck am I supposed to get out of debt?
I can't rap anymore, I just murdered the alphabet.

Plausible if the first single is a smash hit.

I think a lot of people tend to over-estimate the supposed correlation between the amount of Facebook fans, and album sales (in particular the first-week sales).

Rihanna and Macklemore are two prime examples;

- Macklemore sold about 78k in his first week, with a “Facebook fanbase" of roughly 250k (at the time of release). Or, in terms of albums sold per “Facebook fan”; 3/10 (rounded)

- Rihanna sold some 197k of her last album in her first week, with a “Facebook fanbase" of 60 million (at the time of release). Or, in terms of albums sold per ”Facebook fan”; 3/1000 (rounded)

If Em delivers a quality album, it's all in Interscope's hands.

A great marketing campaign, which accumulates a HUGE hype, combined with a well received first-single that appeals to the masses (and especially the "potential consumers") as well as the hardcore fanbase.

From Interscopes perspective, though, it's not all about the first-week sales, 1 sold album is as much of a profit the first week as it is in the second week, or even a month later. On the other hand, labels tend to want a huge first-week, just because it adds to the hype, and will force magazines to print the "story", which means more positive publicity for the album (free-marketing).

No. It's a fact that sales are a lot worse now than back then.
