SSLP VS Relapse

Postby Jimmy Conway » Nov 19th, '12, 00:38

I don't think there are many people here that would put Relapse>SSLP. But for me, they aren't all that far apart. This is the second and maybe last time Em has really went out of his way to give us that really out there Shady personality. I really appreciate that. I'm glad Em made Relapse. He's always been fascinated with the serial killer stuff. I found the album really interesting and it's just awesome.

If I put the track together for relapse, I would make it like this
Relapse
1.3am
2.My Mom
3.Insane
4. Bagpipes from Bagdad
5.Hello
6. Same Song and Dance
7.Stay Wide Awake
8. Deja Vu
9.Buffalo Bill
10.Music Box
11.My Darling
12. Careful what you wish for
13.I'm having a relapse
14. Hell breaks lose
15.Beautiful
16.Underground

To me, that is an amazing, AMAZING album. I just think it's awesome he could get back into that Slim Shady mind set without drugs over ten years later. Pretty impressive. It's a shame he listened to the label and fans and scrapped Relapse 2. I could have stood another 12-15 songs like I posted above.

This. People wanted to hear about his drug addict, about proof and kim. Personal emotional Em. I just wanted to hear good music. People were disappointed not to hear Eminen Show pt2. Not me. I loved what he gave. I could care less about hit sitting in his mansion doing pills or whatever he was doing.

So I guess on the flip side, he was pressured into giving that type of stuff with Recovery and it wasn't that good.

I like Relapse more than SSLP. I like Relapse more than most people, and I don't like SSLP as much as most people. Love them both, but like Relapse better.

Just wish Relapse would get the credit it deserves outside of this forum (i.e. the hip-hop community in general).

I prefer SSLP.

Relapse just felt like a big rhyme-fest, his main objective was more than likely to rhyme, rhyme, rhyme. Even if it was for the hell of it.

Em could have made Relapse much more theatrical than it already was. One by one the songs could have told a story about this sick serial killer. He should have completely scrapped Beautiful and just focused on the serial killer persona. If he had chosen to keep Deja Vu, he'd have to twist it in a way so it didn't completely reflect his own life.

The reason I prefer SSLP is because Em was just breaking out onto the Rap scene and he was eager to showcase not only his abilities as an emcee, but as a witty comedian.

I love Relapse but no. I mean, you have Eminem at arguably his most creative stage as a writer combined with incredible wit and lyricism on top of amazing beats. I think the production on Relapse might be a hair better, but that's the only category I would give Relapse. Some would argue lyrics since he rhymes more on Relapse but I enjoy SSLP's lyrics by a mile. It's like he was just speaking and it happened to rhyme, where I feel with Relapse it was easier to stretch the subject to create a rhyme.

That being said, I still like Relapse.

I definitely prefer/listen to SSLP more. That's just me. Not saying Relapse is inferior or anything because it isn't. I actually appreciate it more now than I used to but while it certainly has brilliant rhyming and probably the most diverse/best flows out of all his albums, SSLP has that genuine wit to it that he executed effortlessly throughout.

Agreed. But I may be 'older Em' biased.
